Is $1400 Gold’s New Low?

I had an interesting morning reading through one of my favorite gold-related blogs, not necessarily a gold prospecting read, but more centered on owning gold as a hedge. With gold breaking above $1400/oz this morning, dhkenrick of OwningGold.com espoused a common quandary of many gold owners when prices soar to new levels – will gold prices continue to climb, or is this the top?

I have been wondering whether, or when the price of gold would break the $1,400 barrier.

Yes, there is a “barrier”. Breaking that round number takes some doing. Perhaps it shouldn’t be any different from breaking the $1,397 barrier – but it is.

Sentiment and psychology always play a significant part in setting the price of gold.

Will the price remain over $1,400?

That remains to be seen. Round figures also tend to trigger selling sprees, which could cause the price to fall again soon.

But now the barrier has been broken, even if we see some sell-off and a fall in price, it will now be much easier to regain this level and keep rising.

Well, the barrier has definitely been broken and the psychology of it aside for the moment, there is other news today that may lend the current gold rally beefier legs – the World Bank Chief, Robert Zoellick.

Episode 5 of the Ore Dump Podcast Available

This week’s episode of the Prospectors Plus 'Ore Dump' Podcast was a hoot to host. The episode opens with a lively discussion on the continued run in gold and silver in the commodities markets. While gold is currently butting up against nearly $1400/oz it was interesting to hear that the metal to watch in the coming months is silver. Silver closed on Friday at $26.73.

This week’s forums 'Stump the Expert' came from M. Gordon following a recent trip to Cody’s Dream, where he asked where in the club’s mine the gold is being found.

We then introduced a new segment called 'Shop Talk' where we bring up the funniest story or happening from the store. This week we were treated to a drunk ladies shoe ending up tied under Doug’s bumper and learned way too much about Larry’s back hair.

The gang then settled into the meat of the show, how to stay active in prospecting across the cold Washington State winter months – outside of the water. In total, four great prospecting opportunities where addressed: working the high water marks outside the normal flood levels, metal detecting, mining and dry gulch hunting and of course working your concentrates. In the course of the conversation, we discussed the value of watching and working rivers at flood, the mechanic of floods and where to find new pay streaks in spring. Very interesting stuff.

Lastly, we closed with upcoming member outings and events not to be missed as well as some homework assignments for our audience. First, we would like all our members to go to our forums and give us their opinion on what outings, events and sceminars they would like to see in the coming year. Secondly, we would like your input on the funniest prospector tee-shirt ideas. This one is a contest. If you post the best tee-shirt idea, you win the shirt! Post your great ideas on our forums today!

Don't forget to give us feedback on this episode in the forums.

Illegal Mining in Florida :)

As any respectable prospector would do, I tend to keep my eyes open wherever I go, diligently looking for sign of the good yellow stuff. With my family in Florida on vacation, prospecting never really left my mind. As we traveled around hitting all the hot spots, I prospected around every corner I rounded, under many of the rocks that laid strewn about us and along the edges of deep pools that are readily abundant in the deep south. Unfortunately, I haven’t yet seen any real color, but I did uncover something – something that simply disgusted me as a recreational small-scale miner. As the title eludes, and you have probably figured out by now, I found proof of both illegal mining (using very old machinery and highly volatile explosives) and slave labor. That’s right – slave labor.

The Color Of Gold

The Color Of Gold

A and year and a half of prospecting has brought Me the understanding of many things that were uneeded in my preprospecting life, Such as which side of a rock to start digging on, How much dirt to put in a five gallon bucket before it gets so heavy that it hurts the next day, The value of water no matter how much the bucket weighs, How much time to waste if your not finding anything (thats directly proportionate to how nice the day is ), That its a good day if you find gold, That its a really good day if you find a lot of gold, And finally that gold comes in the most amazing range of colors from bright and shiny yellow too warm glowing tones some with pumpkin and some with black patinas, cristalline, small nuggets, paper thin flakes, microspecks and wire shaped, The last thing I've learned is no matter what amazing shape or color My Wife loves it all !!!

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED ?

Some Mighty Slim Pickens Today

Went up in the Zunis again yesterday, and camped out. Took my panning gear with me. I found a really good spot last time, and thought this time, that I had found another, hah, no such luck. I found a few small flecks in my initial test pan, so I set up a small sluice, and worked a few buckets full. When I panned the concentrates, I found a few more, but not enough to write home about. I'll probably go back to that 1st spot again in a few weeks, as long as I can get in a few more good days before the cold begins to set in.

Frist Cali Prospect

So, today I went out in search of some yeller stuff and came up empty handed. I was not trying to spend the entire day driving so I stayed close. I went to Stevens Creek. Looked very promising, but pan after pan, throughout the entire hike, no yeller!

What we did find was some great memories, and places to take the dog for a hike! Got some good pic's too. Stevens Creek is a great place for hiking, but not for gold prospecting. Oh yeah, if you ever go there go past the first parking area, there is literally nothing there and it is the most likely place for mountain loins and rattler's [great habitat (snakes), and ambushing (mountain loins)]. That was our first stop and my girlfriend would not stop jumping at every noise lol.

I recently purchased a 45 qt. tote with lid, to store my panning gear in during the off-season, in order to keep it dry. I never knew until a few days back that it would come in handy for another good purpose.

I was in one of those areas where water is scarce, if not non-existant. Anyways, I was digging along an exposed vein of quartz that I had found near a campground in the Zunis. I had brought along a couple of 5 gallon jugs of water, mainly for drinking,(I usually take that much along, in case I run into trouble, and get stranded)

With no running stream near to pan in, it suddenly occurred to me, that, hey, I have the perfect place to pan, right by my tent. I emptied the contents from the tote into the tent, and began filling the tote with one of the 5 gallon jugs. Perfect, and I could re-pan the stuff later on, if I didn't use the other jug of water.

I found about 1/2 a gram of fine Gold that day.

When putting together a kit for panning, some things to remember;

1: A good pan, a classifier, and a 5 gallon bucket.

2: A Black Sands Magnet, a vial, and a snifter bottle.

3: Your Mining Permit, and membership card.

4: Lots and lots of water, and,.....

5: A nice big tote, to store it all in, and to use for panning where there is no stream.

Just a little food for thought.

Metal, Heavy Metal, Yellow Metal!

Mrs. Golddog informed me about a week ago that she was tired of all those little specks I was bringing home and she wanted to go get her own gold. Well, that sounded fine to me since Kchacha was busy this weekend and I don't need much of an excuse to head to Ohio for a little dredging. Saturday rolled around and we got on the road at a leisurely 0945 - not quite the 0700 Kchacha and I hit it with but we're heading in the right direction. After stopping for a pecan pie to keep up relations with the property owner we're making good time up I-71 in the soon to be mine Excursion. We managed to fit the 3" Keene in the back by folding down the second seat so we didn't need the trailer this time. According to the trip computer we're averaging 18 mpg and I'm real happy about that!

Here's a shot of Mrs. Golddog waiting for me to get her dredge together.

We get everything unloaded and in the creek by 1:30 and Mrs. Golddog takes to the nozzle like shes been doing it all her life. I guess she learned something from all those Gold Fever shows I made her watch! While she's sucking up her first specks of gold I check out downstream for a better spot and discover a break in the bedrock across the creek perpendicular to the flow - textbook hot spot! I convinced Mrs. Golddog to stop and move the dredge downstream and check out this spot. Well, not before we have a front mat cleanup so she can see her first specks of gold. Low and behold she had two of those little specks like I had been bringing home! She was ready for more!
We got situated and started working the cut up next to the shore on the inside bend. It was slow going the way the material and rocks were packed in. We worked about 2.5 hours to get about a 2' deep by 2' wide hole. We knocked off about 4:30 and decided to do a front mat cleanup and woo hoo!!! look at those flakes!!! We had never had such a good cleanup. We definitely found where some of that yeller metal gold was hiding - along with metal and heavy metal.

Here's the metal!

Here's the metal!

Here's the heavy metal!

and here's the yellow metal!!!

Needless to say, we had a great time and Mrs. Golddog is already advising me of her needs for future trips. For example, no more pb&j or bologna sandwiches - she wants hot dogs and iced tea. Also, I need to have proper restroom facilities, a shower and a bed. Boy, Kchacha ain't that particular. I've seen him go three days without a shower, never complain about my sandwiches and always have a can of beans handy just in case. I don't expect he'll be losing his spot in the gold camp anytime soon - especially since it sounds like I'll be staying at the Holiday Inn if Mrs. Golddog is along!
