What is this red sand?

Hello all. We went panning yesterday. We had little luck in the stream we were panning in, until I found a layer of black sand and black clay in the stream bed. While panning it down to the black sand, we found a red sand that is hard to pan out of the black sand. While we did find some VERY small "fly poop" gold, we are wondering what this red sand is and why it is so difficult to remove from the black sand and gold. At first I thought it might be ruby sand, but if it were it would not be so hard to pan out, as rubies are not anywhere near as heavy as gold, or black sand. Does any one know what this sand is? Is it red gold? Is it just crap? Help me out here.

Thanks,

Dan

A day Sampling in the Trinity's

Today was a easy day in the Trinity's we gathered apples from an old home site and wild figs from Our favorite Tree. We sampled a spot on an old stret10493348101?profile=original10493349460?profile=original10493348900?profile=original10493350482?profile=original10493350870?profile=originalch of hiway under the new hiway, It was a pretty steep climb down to the water and the narrow ravine kept it cold in the water.  We were lucky enough to see a coyote as we pulled in o the apple trees and bear scatchs in the tree trunk, Bear scat all around I guess they like apples too !

Finally got out!

10493347462?profile=originalIt was about 0530 Friday morning when I was able to back the car out of the driveway and work my way out of town to hit up the interstate and drive the 2 hours it takes to get to the little crick I had been findin gold in last summer. This is the first trip I'd been able to make this year, and I'm hoping the take is gonna be a little better than previous trips because I've chosen a third new spot to sample further downstream. I had brought this time a new AMS (Angus Mac Kirk Sluice) that was bought last year in Nov. And I'm now hoping to use it fer the first time. Finally arrived about 0730, gathered my gear from the trunk, and headed down the trail. The hour long walk was goin to be more treacherous and exhausting because I decided to go 250-300 yds. further downstream that the last place I'd sampled in the past because I'd figured out last year the further downstream I went, the bigger the particles got. By 0900 I had finally arrived to the cords I had put in my garmin, pulled out my folding chair and sat down to begin to cool down and relax. I was sweating more than usual because I had put on my chest waders at the car, and walking slowly and taking my time, didn't help. But I wanted to wear the waders because I knew I was goin to need to be sittin or kneelin in the crick to hand scoop sand and gravel from in b'tween some large flat slabs of rock in the crickbed I had seen before and I hoped would pay off, which it kinda did I might add. Around 10 or so 3 deer walked up to the bank about 40 feet away to my left, but when I reached fer my camera they had quickly decided that they weren't gonna have no part of standin around and posin fer pics, so they quietly but hurriedly said SEE YA! Didn't get to do my first clean-out till 1130, it kinda took a while to set the sluice and then start to pickin and choosin where'd be the best places to dig. Around 1300 I was startin to feel a little hungry, so I stopped and sat down to eat a samich I had got from a deli near the house the day b'fore, (much better than the pop-tarts I had brought in the past). Finished my lunch then got back to digging. By 1700 I was feelin quite tuckered from all the days activities, and began thinkin about how long it was gonna take to gather up my gear but more so that long treacherous walk out, OMG, I'm gonna DIE!!! The mile or so walk to the car through the woods, is all up-hill, an there's about a 100 ft. elevation difference b'tween me and the car over that mile stretch. Yep! Time to go. Surprisingly I had gotten back to the car by 1830, pulled off them waders, loaded my gear, sat down in & started the car and turned on the air, and began again to try an cool down an relax. The daytime high that day was about 87 and humid, and I was again soaking wet from sweat and feelin like I was overheating, I'd swear I'd lost 5 lbs. that day. B'fore I pulled away I got in my pocket and pulled out the little vile with that little bit of gold in it and thought old Angus wasn't lyin when he said his sluice would catch super-fine gold and I think I'm doin good at learnin to pan this fine gold from the cons and happy that I's able to finally set the new sluice and shovel dirt into it, but mostly just plum happy that I'd finally got out.

Here is the classifers I make and they work nice.

Homemade Bucket Classifier
Material & Tools:
(1) 5 gal plastic bucket.
(2) 14” x 14” window screen, hardware cloth with 1/8” or 1/4” squares.
(3) Roll 2” wide duct tape.
(4) Permanent marker
(5) Saw or knife anything to cut the bucket with.
(6) Sheet metal shears.
(7) Hammer
(8) Piece of scrap of wood. 1” x 3” x 6”.
Note: The bucket handle has been removed from the drawing for clarity.
Step #1
Make cuts #1 & #2 with your saw or knife.
Step #2
Unroll the screen or cloth so that it lays flat.
Place narrow (bottom) of part “B” on the screen or cloth.
Using the permanent marker, mark around the outside of the bucket frame. The ink will mark anything
under the material so be careful!
Next, draw another circle 1” to 1-1/4” wider. By eye is OK.
Step #3
Using the shears cut around the outside circle.
Next cut out triangles around the circle as shown
in “D”, by eye is OK.
The finished part should look like “E”.
6”
3”
Cut #1 —–>
Cut #2 —–>
Save this part for
another day !
A
B
C
D EStep #5
Re-insert part “B” into the folded screen and check for snugness. Re-do if needed.
Now wrap about three times with the duct tape starting near the bottom and covering to the top of the
pointed tabs.
Step #6
Insert the combined parts “B” & “E” into the top of part “A” with the screen end going in first.
With the hammer and a short piece of wood drive this assembly to the bottom of part “A”. Due to the
taper of part “B” it will get harder as you go deeper. Stop when you’re at the bottom.
B
Step #4
Place the “B” section on top of the screen and fold the tabs up the side of the bucket

Michael Purplebikes Pickof Bedrock

Ok Michael here's The bedrock you picked out of the last Photos .10493344085?profile=originalA couple of taps and a little leverage and it popped out nicely.10493344299?profile=originalI lifted the Pieces out and washed them down. the cracks were filled with sticky grey clay.10493344880?profile=originalI scraped this cavity clean of the sticky grey clay and liquefied all the  material, The clay had pretty well filled the voids and all I came up with was three small specks and one nice flake.    but you never know tell you POP A ROCK !

When You Find Gold KEEP DIGGIN !!!!

I sampled this spot the morning of July 4th and took 3/4 of a 5 gallon of material classified at 1/4 inch home to run thru the Barbie Sluice.   Some pretty nice color showed up !10493352655?profile=originalThe morning of the 6th and 7th went back and followed the bed rock bowl I was in down stream and took about 25 gallons at 1/4 inch home both days and ran that material.10493352091?profile=original10493352869?profile=originalI kept the buckets in order that they were dug and found less and les gold towards my last bucket. the over burden was thinner on that end of my dig as the bed rock rose.10493352894?profile=originalSo I Guess When You Stop Finding Gold    STOP DIGGIN  !!!

take notice

this is going to take place in every state thea has anything to do with mining or rec prospecting your state is on the list so think and do something to help in the fight dont wait for someone else to do your part for you

SB 838 passes House, 33-27.

Postby Gabe1983 on Sun Jul 07, 2013 3:01 pm

To all my fellow miners, I'm sorry that's it's come to this. We put up a good fight, but it wasn't enough. I thank you for your efforts. The only thing we can do now, is regroup and look to the next phase of the fight, the way our enemies do. There are still Kerby Jackson and the Galice Mining District's injunctions, a possible lawsuit against the state by BLM over this, and we can also work on unseating everyone who voted in favor of this. I say let them pay for their votes with their jobs!

More than that, this doesn't have to be the death of mining in Oregon, not if we don't let it be. Yes, we are losing a big piece of it, but miners are some of the most resilient, inventive people on earth. We CAN overcome this. There are plenty of tools left in our respective arsenals. We have hand-fed sluices, rocker boxes, gravity dredges, gold pans and a million other things, too numerous to list. They may not be as easy or efficient as a suction dredge or a highbanker, but they still work! We can still get that yellow metal we all love so much.

But, stepping away from that for a moment, it's clear to me after this, that the majority in the statehouse no longer represent the people and therefore, I think perhaps the State of Jefferson's time has come. The genesis of it arose from similar complaints many decades ago and it almost came into being in December 1941; the only thing that stopped it was Pearl Harbor, because when WWII broke out, patriotic Americans in the region knew there were more important things to consider. However, the situation today has once again become intolerable, so maybe it's time to think about it again.

Native copper in my pan

10493352452?profile=originalTested out the new impact mill today. Just a preliminary test before the "big" test. I had some ore I got from a mine that supposedly runs 1/2 to 1 oz per ton. I only ran a large coffee can or 1 and 2 inch rock. Talk about dusty! LOL

So I took a 1/2 cup of it and panned it and nothing. No gold and little black sands. Grabbed another pan and opened up the door and with a brush, brushed out some of the stuff still inside the mill, and panned about a 1/2 cup of that. That's when I was excited! There in the pan, too large to pass through the screen was native copper! I took a piece and tapped it with a hammer on the vise anvil and it flattened right out. Put it in nitric acid and it eventually was gone.

Excited because this is the first time I had native copper in my pan! Where there is copper, there is most likely gold with it, around it, and in it. Most large copper mines produce the gold as a "byproduct".  Native Copper is kind of rare!

I've crushed Cinnabar in the past to recover free mercury.   Looking forward to getting out in the field (even if it is triple digits!) It was 128 the other day!

COME ONE! COME ALL! DREDGERS OR NOT ALL ARE WELCOME. BUT... WE NEED DREDGES/DREDGERS TO SET THEIR EQUIPMENT IN THE WATER. PLEASE READ AND GIVE MR. CHMELIK A CALL OR AN EMAIL. IT'S OUR TIME TO TAKE OUR WATERS BACK!!!
OCCUPY OUR RIVERS

CALL TO ACTION

Recent Events in Idaho have prompted several citizens to take actions and demand accountability from their government and I am extremely proud of their actions in their quest for justice.

Two weeks before the Riggins Rodeo the BLM attempted to close Shorts Bar and Island bar. These two beaches are central to accommodating spectators who travel from out the region to enjoy the rodeo and the beauty of the Salmon River. Two weeks before the jet boat races the Coast Guard attempted to shut the race down by not sanctioning the race. In both of these cases citizens stood up and said no and that we the people have had enough.

Now the EPA under the threat of a lawsuit from the Idaho Conservation League is saying no to recreational dredge miners on the premise they are introducing a pollutant discharge into the river when nothing could be further from the truth and U.S. Supreme Court precedent reinforces the dredge miners position. If they can do this to the dredge miners, the jet boaters will be next.

If we do not take action and unite, then we get the government we tolerate.

It is the view of this elected official that we come together and peacefully assemble to petition our government for a redress of grievances, and formally protest the out of control tyrannical government imposing their ideas of how we should live in the west.

If the socialists can come together and occupy Wall Street, surely we can Occupy the River for a day. I would personally support all dredge miners and all other interested parties to come together and have a day of protest. It is our right and I believe our duty to stand united. As a sitting county commissioner I will personally assist the dredgers and dare the EPA to arrest me while exercising our First Amendment Rights. Can I count on you?

One person cannot do everything, however, together we can all do something. We need people to help us organize this event, set a date and get the word out. I will leave you with this thought, In 1857 in his personal conviction in battling for freedom and the equal rights of all as provided for under our Constitution, Frederick Douglas stated, "Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did, and it never will. Find out just what people will submit to, and you have found out the exact amount of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them; and these will continue until they are resisted with either words or blows, or with both. The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress."

Sincerely,

Jim Chmelik

Sample Sample Sample !

Last Weekend I made a quick run to Olney Creek and dug three half buckets of material from likely looking spots, I didn't bother to sample thinking there had to be gold in these spots.                                                                                       10493351852?profile=original Taking The material home then ran it down the Barbie sluice out on the deck the results take me back to the first three rules of Prospecting !
