where to start

Im a newbie (not even gone on my first trip) in Winston-Salem NC. Im looking for ideas of where to go for a novice. The reason im asking is I want to hone my skills and get used to all the equipment BEFORE I try and get permission on private land, by then I want to be capable of producing my best. So.. one of the NC mines? A creek or river like in uwharrie national forrest? (I understand that there are public lands there that can be legally worked). Not looking to find your secret place, just trying to get ideas of how to start getting wet. Thanks All

    good advice from ken and bryan. remember the miners code.

    IF YOU PACK IT IN PACK IT OUT. ALWAYS FILL IN YOUR HOLES, GET PERMISSION FROM LAND OWNERS.

    ALSO WHEN ON NATIONAL FOREST LAND CHECK WITH LOCAL RANGER STATION BEFORE PROSPECTING.

    THE TWO WEEK CAMPING RULE WILL APPLY UNLESS YOU OWN A CLAIM ON N F LAND. GOOD LUCK. THE MAIN THING IS HAVE FUN...

    You could always join GPAA to get access to their claims, then meet up with other GPAA members at said claims and learn firsthand.  I'm a newbie too, and I've also been googling videos like a madman.  I should just cancel my cable subscription cause I don't watch TV anymore, just youtube gold videos.  Make sure you look up the NC state park laws for prospecting, I know Ga laws are pretty stringent.  As well, National forest can be prospected on, but only with a pan and hand shovel/trowel. No sluicing/dredging/highbanking allowed, and no digging into the banks of rivers and streams.

    go to thurmal city for shure...you could buy from the mine and they will drop a truck load off for you

    kevin ck out this site and see if you can find some groupes to join also i think there are some clubs in and around your aera you might join some of them most of the ppl in the clubs and groupes will lend a hand to help you learn the ropes you also might watch the videod on this site and on you tube there are a lot of good videos that you can learn from good luck on your quest looking for gold

      Thanks! Already checking over the site as well as youtube, and googling like a manmad lol yes im a computer geeek. And Ill start looking for groups!!
