gold that is black ?

so i live in Ramona California and there is a rumor that the river witch starts in my property in the foothill of a large mountain range has gold in it and that a local rancher made a living in the early 50's buy working this same river .so i asked some questions of some old timers that know of this cattle rancher and they said its true that he found gold and sold it around town but the gold was black ? and he had to melt it down to sell it ? does anyone ever see black tarnished gold ive have heard of it being black in the chocolate mountains area in old mining books ..i have worked the river in some test spots and come up with alot of black heavies but threw it back in the river and i have found some quartz with gold in it in my front yard of all places not enough to make me rich though

  • hi rc bill in pittsburgh i was playing around doing some research on some gold smelting and i found some mention of black gold it came up under maldonite the wording was placer gold coated with a black or dark brown substance such as a film of manganese oxide so there is no gold color until the coating is removed i think if you would put the black gold in nitric acid check with sombody who might know a little more later bill
    • thanks bill ill try some of that and see what happens
  • I grew up in Ramona on a Ranch. What ranch are you talking about?

  • to answer your question yes there is black/tarnished gold out there !!!! while you are panning and you see a heavy that looks like a rock / hematite /black sand ect. save it and scratch it with a pocket knife!!!!! and no you do not need to smelt it down to see or get the gold.... the only reason you would smelt the gold down is to make it .995 pure gold !!!!! you will get more money for pure refined gold, but it is not needed !!!! who ever told you this is full of B.S !!!!! you will get more money for the nuggets ,pickers and what not.... nuggets can bring upwards of 10% to lets say 70% over spot price depending on the size and weight of the nuggets you have!!!! pickers are the same but not worth as much unless you can find some one that is making rings and sure out of them.... the only thing i ever melt/smelt down is my fine fine flower gold and black sands.... as you will see when more people post on your topic they well tell you the same thing man!!!!!

    • Sorry, Gold can get coated, but does not tarnish.
"Tarnish" is equated to "rust", an oxidation of the host metal.
      Gold doesn't "rust"/oxidize.
  • Here is a black mineralised rock, which I think contains gold. Under a magnifying glass I think I see specks of gold. It is also very dense and heavy. What does is usually cost to have a assay done?

    • that looks like it might be meteorite here is a link to some examples that show what to look for check it and see if it is magnetic http://epswww.unm.edu/meteoritemuseum/hand-samples.htm unfortunately there is no gold in meteors if you buy a crucible you can melt it with a torch if its gold it might melt ?
