Hello All: I'm trying to figure out what sluice box I want to purchase. I reside in Northern Utah, and all we have is very, very fine flour gold. I have been doing some research, and I have narrowed it down to a Martin MS46 and Keene A52. I would appreciate any and all thoughts before I invest any money...

i have to agree with jimbo on the clarkston study in the past 50 some years of prospecting and trying all different types of matting i find that the keene will do the same as the martin both are good sluices i like and use the vortex mat in all my equipment it works great in sluices as well as in bankers and dredges i recover very fine gold with what piece of equipment i use mat as well as sluice boxes are a prefence to the person as to what they like feel free to ck out the pic s of the fine gold i have recovered on my page
What i've found to work best for fine gold, after a LOT of studying, is the modified clarkson riffle but only in a dredge. That riffle design needs good water flow but according to the most indepth study i've read, it had the highest recovery rate of fine gold. Here is a link to the study: http://www.hecklerfabrication.com/files/Clarkson_Riffle_Test.pdf
Jason, I have Martin's big highbanker. I dumped the carpet and riffles straight away, cuz like you, I deal with small gold here in MI. I went with gold hog matting and I've not been disappointed. I need to get a new mat setup for the various places here in MI as some places have bigger pieces than other places. Ya wont be bummed out with gear from Martin's. Good luck!
Hey Jason, here's my take. Everyone has a different opinion so this is mine. Forget the hungarian riffle sluices and choose a drop riffle sluice. You will get way better micron gold recovery with these and of course they get the big stuff too! I recommend the Le Trap sluice. It has 19 riffles and gets gold the super tiny shiny!
Keen over Martin.. BUT have you looked into the drop riffle sluices? Like the Angus McKirk? I own a A52 sure its nice, but without the stand it can take time to setup in the creek...the drop riffle I won from GPS a few years ago..Wow that baby is awesome!..drop that sucker in the creek and hit it with dirt..takes no time to setup and tune, and WOW does it catch the gold!
martin mini sluice great for fine gold
try wolftrap sluice . has fastwater & slowwater revervisable riffels
Both boxes have their ups and downs but I prefer the A52. You can build a high banker easily by adding a header box and legs, plus you can get a set of dredge riffles for the A52 so it can handle the water flow of power equipment.
