Has anyone tried hog mats in a small (2”) dredge? If so, what mat combination did you use and how did it perform?
I’m considering mats for my dredge but I’m a little uncertain if I can get enough angle to increase the velocity sufficiently for good exchange. The box is 10 inches wide and 36 inches long so there’s not a lot of adjustment opportunity. Any thoughts/suggestions?

Thanks Mark, always great to get hands-on experience when considering a new approach. Not sure if I can get 7° with a small floating dredge without the end of the box being underwater but will sure do some experimenting and see what I can come up with. It’s good to know that Doc recommended the mat combo I was considering. I’ll pick up a couple of mats after the first of the year. You’re absolutely right about the information here being spot on. Although I’ve been prospecting for a while, I always lean something new. I’ve found that everyone knows something but no one knows it all! :-)
Thanks again and a very Merry Christmas.
I have a keene 2 inch dredge and i use hogmats in mine ..what doc recommends in that is talon front to back and run at high throttle I have run it all summer and have had great results very happy hope this helps
Morning guys and thanks for the responses to my question. Looks like the mats will work in my short sluice box.
2 Dogs: That sounds like a nice highbanker/dredge combo you have and with those different types of mats, I sure your recovery rate is great.
Ken: That’s some really nice gold. Do you use a small dredge and what types of mats are you using?
Tim: Sounds like you and I have identical rigs. I was considering cut River Hog and Talon just to mix it up but apparently you’re doing well with straight Talon. 2 dogs recommended about a 7-1/2 ° which is about 1-1/2 in drop over the length (36”) of the box. Is that about what you’re running?
A very Merry Christmas to all and heavy pans in 2016.
I have mine set as steep as it will go on my dredge so about a inch per foot would be my guess
Tim, you said you had your box set “about as steep as it would go”. Here’s a picture of my dredge box holddowns. As you can see, they’re at the second float support from the front or about 20 inches from the actual front of the pontoon or 13 inches from the front of the support frame (did ya get all of that!). Is this about where your box is set? Do you use any additional weight on the back of the dredge and approximately how far from the water’s surface is the end of the box when you’re running in production mode?
Thanks in advance.
John

Thanks Tim. That's about what I was calculating. I'll pick up some mats in the near future and let you know how I come out.

i have a 2 inch high banker dredge combo w/ 2 5ft sluice boxes. i talked to doc at gold hog he recommended the following for the first 5 ft sluice. ( in this order ) UV mat (1-6'' wide pcs. )scrubber 2 pcs, tallen cut the ridge down to 1''
razor back, scrubber, uv. if you can set your sluice at 7 to 71/2 degree angle. that should put gold in your sluice.
