Help increase production?

Alright, now i know most of you have a lot more expirence and knowledge of recovery methods, and i want to pick some brains. I found a spot that is a very large area, with a lot and i mean a lot of fines flakes and pickers in the overburden. Now the digging is easy and classifying is pretty easy but still not as fast as i would like. A standard sluice wont work well herebecause of the surging current so i use a drop riffle sluice i built using a truck bedliner. Before you say any thing, it doesnt lose a spec! And is extremly forgiving. It can be run slow, fast, in a surging current, its easy to clean up (about 2 min tops) i love it. You can hav it completely under water and works just as well. But what i want to know is, some ideas to make it self classifying to speed up recovery. I have an idea and want to know what you guys think. Would putting 1/8"bars running the length of the sluice about 1" to 1 1/2" above the riffles disrupt the eddy in each riffle there is about 35 1"x1" riffles in the box. Since i dont get to go as often as i would like i want to make every min count. Any thoughts would be apriciated. Oh and no power equipment allowed here. Thanks Guys. Scott n.

  • well it kinda depends on the material as to what i use and do if the material is dry i use my classifier that i built if its wet i just shovel or dredge

i can fill a 5 gal bucket in 3 sec if its dry  classified down to a 1/2 inch

     wet is a different story

  • Ill post some pics of the 2boxes and the gold i recovered from the smaller box less than half the size of my large box. Ive just got to get the pics off my phone on to my computer. Id dont know how to download them from my phone to this site
    • scott go to your page and where it says add photos click there then on the bottom right side it says add photos from phone ...hope this helps    Tim

      • Hey tim. I tried but for some reason, i think my 4yo son accidently deleted my mobile app and i havent been able to get it back also i cant send or receive attachments through my text anymore it happened at the same time as my mail issue. I call att support and they said the only way to get it back was master reset. Im not doing that yet. I think ill call yahoo support and see what they can come up with. Way to much important stuff on my phone to reset yet. Not to mention all the pics of my kids and money i paid for games for the youngins. For now ill just drag and drop from my pc its easy enough thanks tim
    • Scott, I'm not sure what you meen by "surging current". To me, that meens your flow increases and drops intermitantly.

IF a sluice is set up properly, it will maintain a constant flow. Start with a 1" drop to 1' length of slope, you can make adjustments from there. The surface of the water flow in your sluice should show a diamond or cross hatch patern in the area above, upstream, of your riffles. ( slick plate area ) A shallow depth over the riffles will not show the diamonds.

The bars running the length of your sluice, not good. They will serve no purpose but to disturb your flow.

The turbidity action from your riffles need to be allowed to do their job.

      • It wouldnt be for a standard type sluice. Ive been using a drop riffle i made from a truck bed liner. As far as the surging flow. The part of the river im working only has a couple places to set a sluice up. Because of the 8' drop just up river and the fluctuation of the release from the dam up stream its almost impossible to get a consistant flow. A standard sluice is useless here because the water can rise and fall a foot in a few hours. If the flow stops periodically the material caught under a hungarian type rifflewill wash out quickly but with the bed liner sluice the black sand may wash out alittle but the gold stays put. The pics i posted yesterday are a perfect example had i been using my A52 i would have only got what stck in the carpet the rest would have washed away. Ill fill you in alittle more when my brain gets cooled off and i get some sleep. I got 3hrs lastnight and it was 97 today and im not a guy who was meant to be in the hot sun i got abit fried. Ill catch up with you tomorrow or this evening
        • I hope you can post some pics of your operation, I'd sure like to see what you have going.

Maybe some one here on the forum can tell you how to download from your phone.

          • Ill take some pics of the boxes i use and post them today or tomorrow. I feel like i got beat by a gang with bats! Its funny, when im at home wanting to get out and move some dirt, the pain and soreness never creep in my mind and im wishing i could go every day. The day after i go i realize that my body doesnt want me to. Im in pretty decent shape for 39yo and this kicks my ass. I guess i could go to easy access spots but to get the gold im after you got to go to the hard to get to spots. Boy do i pay the price. The water droped another 6"today and the high temp for today is in the 80s 10yrs ago i would have went back today
            • Believe me, I feel your pain.

I just turned 60 and have sciatica brought on by bein' in a train wreck in my mid 20's, talk about a pain in the arse. LOL

I use a cane to help goin' up and down banks and to cross the stream.

Gotta just push through the aches and pains, go for the Gold!

              • There has deffinately got to be something wrong with our brains to go out and work 100 times harder just to get a few tiny peices of yellow metal out of the ground and call it fun! What the hell is wrong with us miners. Im sitting here in absolute agony everytime i move or breath and all i can think about is when my next opportunity to go do it again. I will say this though last week hurt worse. What i need to do is work out between trips and durring the rainy season that would help with the muscle soreness and the joint and back pain. Before i started prospecting my back was a mess. I dont know what it is exactly but my back seems to like me carrying bucket after bucket of wet heavy earth. There was a point where my back was so badthat i couldnt even lay down couldnt sleep it was a nightmare. Now aside from some muscle soreness my back feels good as new. Wish my throwing arm would do the same i would get out and play some baseball again. Hell if i would have been doing this in my early 20s i probably wouldnt have the artritis in my joints that i do now from all the sports i played.
