HI THERE, IM IN NE WASHINGTON AND IM HAVING A HARD TIME FINDING A PROFESSIONAL THAT CAN RUN AND ASSAY GOLD ORE FOR ME. IN CALIFORNIA THERE WOULD BE NO PROBLEM, BUT HERE IVE HAD NO LUCK. SOMEONE SUGGESTED TAKING IT TO A UNIVERSITY WITH A GEMOLOGY DEPT. THANKS SO MUCH, GG49

Difference between appraisal and assay.

I can see an appraisal being done where gold is visible in an amount where the piece may be used in jewelery. A reputable jeweler can help you out here. Stay away from pawn shops. They don't know squat and want to give a low price in hopes of a purchase and high profit.
An assay uses only a small amount of ore. As I remember, only 2 oz.
An assayer will pulverize the piece, melt it down, and determine a percentage of gold content.
That percentage is then used as an estimate for the total ore body value.

In todays market you would get 8 to 10 grand...We sold a big nugget this spring whin gold was 954$ and got 1600 an oz.. This was talking to buyers all over the west, we did good getting that!!! You can see it in my pictures...
