My wife asked me about buying a metal detector. I am not sure what would work best for me. I think I might use it more for finding gold in the creek so it needs to be a little waterproof. Maybe even up along the creek banks even. But could be fun to look for lost jewelery in the river from all the rafters doing their floats. But could be fun to go detect around the university after a football game. HELP what machine does all this within say $500 or is that not enough? Should I save some more?

  • I have the Minelab X-terra 705 Gold Pack.  I love the thing. Easy to use and to identify targets.  I have tried it a few times at gold claims of the GPAA in Northern California and spend the day digging nails and bullets  no nuggets yet.  Most places you can buy it for 698 bucks.  If you get the thing make sure to get the cover for the display so it does not scratch when your hands are dirty.  Also a must is the Garrett Pro Pointer.  That thing will pay for itself with the speed and ease of finding your targets.  I tried to do without for a month or two because I was cheap.  Stuff in the dirt is almost invisible and the Pro Pointer really narrows it down.  You can locate the specific area of your targets in seconds instead of minutes and you can dig a much smaller hole.  You can see some of the treasure I found with mine in the photo section of my website.  The white gold cross with diamonds and the small gold ring I found recently really helped offset the cost of my machine.  I found them minutes apart and then did not find anything else all day   Good Luck  goldfeverbucket.com

    • Hi Bradley, Thanks for your feedback. I really like the 705 gold also. I have had it out 1 time playing and really enjoyed the ease of use. My finds so far have been to pull tabs and 2 cents. I agree I defently need the Pro Pointer.  Working my way up in the world LOL like your buckets. Pretty cool!

  • "There are many excellent MDs on the market. The best is the one a person is used to and knows how to use" Charles Garrett

    • What your suppose to know how to use them too??????  : )

      • I won't know what sound my detector makes when it finds gold until I find some gold!!!! Lol

  • I posted on this thread a few days ago, but I have a Whites GMZ, super easy out of the box to use, uses the same gold coil as the GMT, but it runs $499.  It is a nugget detector, but is basically hunting all metal, all the time.  I'm still getting used the the different tones on different metals.

    • i said gmt but meant gmz... :( ..KK

  • Riverdigger why do you say it's a bad link.... if someone never saw hawk gold detector this site with rob showing you how the hawk works near the end of the video is a simple explanation on how it works. Now i know there is more out there but this one is simple to understand

    • Dennis, I 'm not saying the episode is bad...your link to it wont go through. thats all.  Hince, a BAD link.

Thanks for the acceptance on FB page.

  • a zip lock bag won't hamper  the coil just don't use any metal zip tie thingys  on the bag. The hawk md 20 works great under water and it is made to go under up to about 3-4 feet just don't get the control part wet. that's what the manufacture said and the distructions you get with it.  if you haven't seen a hawk go to there web site or to
