Larry,
Arizona is good for the winter, that's the season there for prospecting, mostly metal detecting, do you own a gold detector?
Here are a some links to forums for Arizona and metal detecting if you haven't visited these forums yet it is a great place to start....
Minelab PI metal detectors are the best to use, but you may get by with a VLF, Fisher's Gold Bug 2, White's GMT, or Tesoro Lobo Supertraq are the better ones to use.
thanks steel.its been hard lost my mom last year.got any ideas where a newbie could go for the winter to learn how and where to find au.cant stop looking at those claims for sale on ebay would like to stake a claim myself but know nothing about it.thanks

There are a lot of accessable places to prospect in the fall.
A lot of gold is still being found below 5000' elev. Chilly, but not too cold.
