  • I looked at the videoon the water power trommel and I thought it looked good nice and all of the hoses and they did not show a clean up, but its not like building your own. There something about making your own make it more like a treasure of your own and when people look at it and ask where did you get it you can say I or we made it.As you mke your tools or equipment you have somthing to talk about and post to your freinds as one of us mayhave some ? for you. You would be suprize on what may be asked.

    • You are soo right Durant, but then there are people like me who people ask: "I don't know where you got that, but you got taken, dude!" when I show them what I built. But I say you are right because my Harley is something I spent many months paying a dealer in a salvage yard for and when I made that last payment, we dragged it onto my trailer and I took it home. Many months of work later and practically a whole new front end, some bondo and some paint, a bunch of new pieces that I couldn't fix such as my engine guard and some new lights, only to find out the "Big C" wouldn't let me ride on two, I was just too weak. From there I had to save and get a really high interest loan and buy an outrigger kit, often called "training wheels" by those less affectionate people whose closest relatives still have prehensile tails and scratch under their arms a lot. I don't care, it's mine, I built it practically from scratch and I ride baby, I ride! But could I build a dredge or a trommel? You would probably find remnants of what I made in a pile in the same salvage yard where my Harley Ultra Glide once resided! I just don't have the genius like you have and I have to be content with having to purchase what I need. Now I might figure a way to make it work better for me but to have the imagination to picture something in my mind and just build it, that bus stopped somewhere else, not at my house. Peace Brother.

    • That is a beautiful thing, Mark!
      • Thank you. Took many hours building it but I enjoyed it.
  • Charles,

I have just finished building a 12" trommel. I used a 5.5 hp motor with a 6 to 1 gear reduction and everything is driven by chain. You will be happier with a chain. If you use a belt, it will slip once it gets wet.

  • looks like a good dtart Charles. What gauge steel steel are you using? How did you roll the punch plate or where did you get it from if it was pre rolled? How is the punch plate welded on the seam?
  • You have a good start and I have a suggestion.

Remove the bottom bracing and brace the legs up higher.

You will almost never find a flat spot to set up your trommel.

Make the legs adjustable for uneven terrain.

Yes, chain drive will give you less probs.

  • belt or chain it doesn't matter  my trommel is belt  no matter what don't over load it thats the key what you  have is a good start but you have a long way to go  good bearings hard wheels for drum tension tighteners gear reduction fed hoopper guard for trommel if you look at my pic  you can get some ideas adjustable legs to get right angle of feed and trommel spray bars in side trommel and on feeder table  i have a nylon sheet also
  • chain
