Sluice box designs.
What do you like the best?

I have used A
Keene A52, dependable 120$
Keene A52P, Fine gold recovery excellent, like it but bulky and clumsy I payed 100$ from Mark Keene, 1st one ever sold to the public, prototype.
River robber, clean up, prospecting fine gold recovery, Like a lot. 80-120$
Prospectors Plus sluice, Fine gold and nugget recovery good, dependable. 130$ I think, they have changed the riffle system.
and a few other small clean up sluices.

Now I have found another one, here, that has been around for years and was wondering if anyone would share there experience with them.

A Drop riffle sluice box. Looks simple and lightweight and easy to set up like the rest of them. 60 -100$ depending where you go.

Any input on the drop riffle sluice will be very helpful. I have see a few comments from other prospectors that have used them and they will use nothing else now.

I plan to make my own sluice using Kevlar, No particular reason, just because I can and I can make the riffles look any way I want with wood and resin, and it will cost about the same as the rest of the sluices if I just go out and buy one.

  • got my old PC back up and running and found a pic of a few of my sluices and stands. I built the test sluice. the void allowed the material to just sit there. no good. Pics and video coming soon.

  • I am a big fan o the angus Mack drop/ramp riffles. I get loads of black sand. Easy to clean. Takes a little bit of experience to setup correctly but the easy clean outs are fantastic.
  • A WWWOOOOOOMMMMMMMMM MAchine with Vibraaatiooonn

  • I found this and was curious how it would work as a drop riffle. Since I have a minimal understanding of fluid dynamics, I am curious if someone that does would venture a guess of how this would work as a drop down, drainable riffle. I think I have enough Plexi to make a test sluice so I can see how the water acts in the track.

  • So I have a board (The negative)
    2' is slick plate,
    1' of 1/8th"wide x 1/8th"deep x 1/4" spacing,
    3' of 1/2"wide x1/2"deep x 2" spacing drop riffle.
With a Flair at the top I think this is long enough.
    or a progression of 1/8" - 6" slick plate -, 1/4" - 6" slick plate- 1/2"

Its simple, I have the tools and the wood and the fiberglass to make a prototype to test.

    Angles of drop downs.
Straight,  beveled, dovetale?? combination of all?

  • OK, So I think some parameters are in order to narrow it down.

For Beach mining: (desert sand) what arrangement of riffel would you suggest. I live in central wa. and the land here was assayed at .5oz per ton. all debris from the great floods and glaciers. columbia basin/river

Streams, spring/early summer  flows, The A52 and la-trapp  worked well for this.    Dredging after that.

Joshua, I do agree with you on the point of learning from experienced people. My step father drilled this into my head. Never be ashamed to ask stupid questions, You will learn the correct questions to ask soon enough. I am ignorant of many things and still ask questions about the things I do know.

I really do like the drop down riffel sluice, like the river robber/la-trap.

    8'x 10"x6" trough. 2 foot slick plate.-

Should this trough be straight or tapered? straight I'll keep it simple.

Something along this line of simple.

  • I was green through and through Ken and followed instructions well 10 years ago. I have learned a lot since then. I have been focused on a saline based PM/As stabilizer, PM recovery mill.  A different animal entirely.

I ask questions to get my thinking straightened out for the project at hand. That particular mat worked very well when I used it to run sand.

  • i kinda disagree jesse if i would of  slod a lot of the gold i have found i wouldnt of had to work but i liked to work and prospect both so thats what i did  most of my life  i have more fun now that i am retired from working  my biggest thing is helping ppl build equip and helping them to be better prospectors

    • I'm not sure what part of my statement you diagree with Ken, but I also have worked all my life, but now retiered. I have only just started prospecting. I am a newbee at this, and like most newbees I have done a lot of research. I don't plan on selling what gold i have found. I like looking at it. What i like most is the nice people I meet regularly and teaching it to anybody interested. I think we are getting off the subject that Aaron started
