I must say, there have been raving reviews of the "Falcon" detectors, but I have a delema.

The type of detector that I am seeking, is one that I can use to quickly scan the tailings pile of screened out over sized material that I don't run through my sluice. 1/8 inch and up.

From what I was told, the "Falcons" are more for use on individual specimens and not timely for use in scanning a pile of tailings.

I am drawn to the "Falcon" partly because of the price. I really don't want to dump a lot of cash for the larger detectors.

In light of what I've been told about the "Falcons", can anyone recommend a low priced detector for the purpose of scanning small tailings piles?

Any advise greatly appreciated.

  • Your assessment of the Falcon is correct. Every rock in your tailing pile is an individual specimen to the Falcon. Find a prospecting partner with a gold bug 2 with the small coil.

I have no problem going over someones tailing pile for them with my GB2. It only takes a few minutes.

Before you buy any other metal detector for gold, you need to take a small nugget, the smallest one you can live with, and use it to test the metal detector your buying. Don't go by what you see in print from the manufacturer.
  • steelpan, new,or used?ok new then.has to be a gold det.so,whites gmz cheapest.but, could get a nice used gmt same price, much better unit.when in redding i walk thru olde west pawn shop on the off chance.there was a nearly mint gm2 for 225.00 recently.in right hands,gm2 does what gmt does.only manual balance only.agree that falcon probe not enough coverage.right now,you want to check screen piles.in the future? advise that you go ahead and get a real vlf gold machine.since you need one anyway.gmt,gb2,lobost,mxt,new,or used not abused.youll be glad you did.luck. oh yeah,if the piles are that small, maybe throwem in bucket, sluice em in small stream sluice nearby.anything plus 1/8 will stick there.
