NC Dredge Boat

So me and some friends were kicking around some ideas (More so for sport while we cleaned cons.) and the discussion came up about using a flat bottom skiff as a river dredging platform. It was a fun mental exercise and I was wonder has anyone done anything like that here in NC? Would there be any regulations that would need to be taken into consideration? Like i said it was just a fun idea but having been a boat operator in the Navy, it has peaked my interest somewhat. Anybody have any thought?

    • I can send you pics of mine which is abs and my freind also built one out of hdpe and he actually learned how to weld and repair hdpe boats during this project.his uses the water pump and a simple attach to drive it..whe r e as I use electric motor
      • Bobby i love to see the pics. You can post them here or to my personal email. fausel71@yahoo.com

I'd really appreciate it. We have generated alot of interest among ourselves.

    • I got total 1100$ invested in mine and it far outperforms anything out there mass produced...the sluice is 6' long
      • Nice rig. I'd love to see some more pics of it. That could be a lot of help in planning for us. I can offer my private email should you need it. Anything you can offer would be awesome.

  • Actually we looked at the Jon Boat the most seriously. They are cheap and readily available. Running a long wide sluice and a quality high pressure pump would allow for a stable/mobile platform. A 2 man crew, 1 dredger and 1 tender (Rotating) would get the most bang for the buck. Not to mention a easy place for gear storage and ease of movement.

  • I have seen that boat they fab it in the body shop at the race teams shop.....its nice but who know what it cost? I have seen one built from a jet ski motor and pump system to.....just get a Keene and a pontoon lol

    • I believe it will be a good build. If you are in deep water. This way one person can be in the boat instead of floating along the edges and trying to get work done but I do not believe it will work for shallow water, pontoons would work much better. I believe definitely make it to fit both so you can change it out for different prospecting conditions. Just remember whatever you do post pictures. We would like to see how it turns out good luck with your project. I wish you the best

  • So we have had a really good time kicking around ideas on this subject. We have investigated everything from Jon Boats to Flat Bottomed Skiffs. We have enjoyed it so much, we may look into an actual build of some sort at a later date. Could be an interesting long term project. I'll drop an occasional post to update, but would love to entertain more questions, concerns, or additional input from anyone interested.

  • there was a setup like your talking about posted on the gpaa forum not sure just where or what it was posted under
