More drilling/chipping questions, some info.

Still need cheap chipper/drill. More questions. After doing some research based on answers I see that there are some small, relatively cheap drill/hammers, pneumatic, such as the Sullair mrd9, Chicago pneumatic cp0009a, Atlas copco dkr36, etc., All in the range of $700 new but available used for half or less, and there are knock offs down to $49. These are all in the range of 20 cfm, which adds the cost of a pretty good gas compressor. Any info on just how much air supply these things will actually work with?. Maybe interested if they actually will do some fast work. Anyone used one this size? Also there are some really small air tools that are chippers as low as $10-$15 at harbor freight(I know). But anyone used a really small chisel on soft rock? They are 3000 strokes a minute 1&1/2" travel, use 3-4 cfm at 90 lbs. All answers that help dispel my ignorance on drilling are appreciated.

  • Well, now you just gave me a good chuckle. I'm a native Californian, grew up in Susanville. (NW of Reno). Little surprise for Steel Pan there, he knows it for sure. I'm a westerner and nutt'n else. In AZ now. Had to get out of that nuthouse over there. Sure love all the empty space over here. I live right next to one of the two biggest copper mines in the US, they've been chipping on that thing for 140 years straight. One BIG hole. When all the wide open spaces are gone so will I be, thank god.
  • It would be nice to have access to some private property or a tunnel site. Most out West where I am from are on public land; either BLM or National Forest. I dont have any problem with chipping, prying and such, talking about it and telling people how to do it is a different story.

I will try to keep in mind my view points are that of a Californian.

Figured I'd let you know how I went. 4400 watt generator that I can lug up the hill and pay for with gold, 8 horse Briggs and Stratton. Harbor Freight 2 hp chipping hammer from Ebay, total cost $62, including the bits, (about $180 new). A roll of romex I had laying around. Since I can currently chip out 30 to 100 pounds an hour by hand depending on varying hardness, I'm in bidness. Now the problem becomes getting the ore down the hill. But that I can handle fine.
Wagonmaster- Private property, OLD patented claims, developed adits. I'm fine chipping and talking about it.

    Sounds Great!
    Thanks for sharing your solution.
    Best of Luck!

  • be real careful with your disscussions about drilling, chipping crevicing ect many Land managers view this activity as vandalism. Rock Climbers have gotten guite a bad rap with there tactict( some at least) of chipping hand and footholds on otherwise unclimbable(at least to them) rock. It has been banned in all state parks and national forests for this purpose at least. I think your best bet is to avoid the topic and keep your activities unknowested.

It is a great stratigie for uncovering Gold.
  • When you memtioned "Sullair", I automaticly thought of the 80# hammer.
Like tryin' to hang on to the tail of a "jacked up" kangaroo. LOL

I like the idea of tryin' a rental. Kind of find out what will work for ya.
  • Steel Pan has asked the same thing i was going to ask?
  • *chuckles*.....s'llright man. I know I for one sometimes get so focused on what I'm doing that I miss the simple stuff. That's what reaching out, friends and this web place is for. *grins* ( It's okay goldpannergrub, you came to the right place, we'll fix you up and make it better, hahahahahaaaaaa )<---------said in psuedo docs voice)
  • Hey JT, "it was so simple, like the jitterbug it just plumb evaded me". Jimmy Buffett, "The Bear". I'll be damned if I know why I haven't checked that out already.
  • How about just renting a small jack hammer and compressor?? Or whatever will do the job? Especially if all you'r going to chip out is 5 ton or so and then purchase your own equipment.
