Miners Moss

So, I went to buy an air filter for the house today.  They had these Natural Aire filters made with "natural fibers," and it looks a whole lot like some of the miner's moss I have seen in some of the dredges around here.  It's only about $4.00 for a 20x30x1 sheet (which is a lot cheaper than miner's moss).  I was just wondering if anyone had ever tried using any of this in their dredge/sluice and if it worked.  I have never used miner's moss, just stuck to rubber matting and carpet, so I wasn't sure.  Thanks.

  • This is another shot of the belting that Ken is describing. It is the ONLY way to go for any sluicebox.

    • ok, low profile is the ticket.when you say belting,do you mean conveyor belt,or drive belt,or what?ken,i do not have yahoo, not compatible with my homepage.will gmail work.tx for the effort and info folks.
      • andrew it a conveyor belt in over 44 pluss years of prospecting i have not seen or found anything that compares with this belting it cleans up easy last forever like i put some in a highbanker dredger 30 years ago its still as good as it was when it went in jim dexter puts it in a lot of his equip as far as it goes there are a couple of pic s on my page of a black gold pan with fine gold in it there was over 33 ounces of gald taken out from my tromel operation in one day most of it would go through a 30 mesh screen our daily take of gold for 31 days was 30 t0 35 ounces a day pics of my tromels are there on my page we did a clean up twice a day so as not to lose any gold we did sampleing about every 30 t0 40 mins to ck on loseing gold none was found but it depends on how you run your equip and angel and water flowi been useing this belting for over 30 years and tried a lot of other things like i tell people its all in what you like and dislike i know there will be a lot of imput from a lot of peopl on this subject but if your useing a derdge or banker combo give the belting a try

        • would grainger have this?could check myself, thought i would ask.am ready to throw some fine gold flume boxes together, thinking about some alternative things.such as different undercurrents for about 3 or more different sizes, each with its own flow regulation.and i mean banking, not dredging.would take a houseboat to float one.not really, but need sluice length to break clay and hardpack into usable media.this belting appears to be suitable for minus 50,at least.best wishes.drew
        • You are right on about this belt Ken. I've heard of it being called Alaskan Gold cloth and it can be purchased from the larger industrial supply places and occasionally you can pick up short scrap pieces from them. I used to purchase this stuff in 300 to 400 foot rolls and I pulled a lot of short pieces out of the garbage before they were able to dump it. Unfortunately, my supply has been dwindling since I retired.

  • there is a pic posted but it does not show very good its on the slide show on the gps site even with the belting you need to do a clean up more then once a day
  • years ago i started useing something a lot better then miners moss its lasted over 30 years and is still as good as it ever was i am sure that jim dexter will agree with me on that since he puts it in a lot of his equipment he builds it has proven to be a fine gold catcher its not a matting or carpet but a type of belting i think iim sells it as i do to when i say fine gold catcher i am talking about gold that goes through a 100 mesh screen but its to each their own as to what they like or dislike just my 2 c2nts worth
    • do you have pics of this belting material? i think about this very subject several hours per day, regardless of what i am doing.miners moss has undoubtably lost me a couple lbs of gold.as i have trouble stopping to cleanup more than once a day.tx in advance.
      • I have tried to send Andrew Hall a message ( but apparently I have to be accepted as a "friend" to do this). So I clicked the appropriate box to send him a message.
Losing this much gold (fines) is bad news! There IS a way to capture fines, but I'm not in a position to disclose this on any forum(I have been accused of being a spammer many times).
You are correct : Miner's Moss is not the way out for this fine gold capturing method. Neither is carpet or Astroturf or any other medium. Mother Nature is showing us how to catch these fines; sand! It took me years to see this ... I then developed a method of sand capture.
Send me a message Andrew: I'll show you.
        • Hi Andy. I'm having trouble with saving fine gold. Would like to see how you are doing it. Thanks Bob Moler
