  •  The infinium and the gold bug two different creatures, ones a low frequency great for small gold detector.. The other is a pulse machine great for mineralized soil and depth yet won't find the small gold of the gold bug..The price is another difference.. I would try to get a used gold bug, and a new infinium.. Locate areas of gold with the infinium and clean it up with the gold bug.. The reason for the new infinium is they have been evolving the last few years and are getting better and better... Good luck  and great prospects.. Going for the Gold  , Mike
  • We are buying 2 new GDs this month, Ive been looking at the Infinium LS and a gold bug 2, little different but want some flexibility between myself and wifes so we get results in more area types.
  • Bought my wife a Minelab X terra 705.  She loves it.  She can just turn it on and go with all factory settings.   But I can't let it go with that,  so when I use it I have to fool with all the bells and whistles.  Really a good allaround machine.

    :)

  • Don't overlook Cabela's bargain cave.

I figure a purchase like this is just like trying to find any treasure. Join a club, read the forums etc, on what detector to buy. Then look for a deal.

Certainly if you don't have patience to read manuals, watch videos, etc, going through a local dealer willing to train can be worth the premium prices but, I've scored some really killer deals in the last few months:

Open box Fisher Gold Bug $275 Reg $499

    Open box Minelab E-Trac $980 Reg $1499

Open box Minelab Safari $485 Reg $999

All with full factory Warranty, and you have 30 days to return Bargain Cave purchases.

I think people are buying them for an outing and then returning them?  I think Cabelas gives you 90 days to return them when you buy them new, so there is no risk there if you want to try something out.

If you see something in the bargain cave, always ask for a better deal.

    • Keith,

Those are some great deals. I wish I could find deals like that.

I bought my Excal 1000 II from Kellco I'm not complaining at all since I bought it wright before they went from the 2 yr down to the 1yr. I got the 2 yr plus an extended 2 yr warranty I've still got about 8 mths left.

      • How do you like it? I'm thinking about trading my Infinium for an Excal. I just can't seem to get the knack of the Infinium.
  • Hello Nancy! Get in touch with a GPS Sponsor, like http://www.easternusprospectors.com/page46.html and check out the Tesoro Lobo SuperTraq. Ask around, go to local club meets and swing a few member's detectors. Take your time and educate yourself! For instance, the two best small gold finding VLF machines on the market today operate at two DIFFERENT frequencies! 17.8kHz and 71.2kHz - Go Figure! Good Luck!

    • Terry,

What are the 2 best gold detectors on the market, and how did you arrive at that conclusion?

My Gold Bug sees gold the size of fly shyt in a pan of magnetite, and of course anything bigger. So I'm a little disappointing to hear I bought the wrong machine.

      • What does fly shyt look like??  I see alot of fly larva, but no shyt.
  • I personally prefer Minelab Detectors. I use a Sovereign GT.  My wife uses a Explorer SE2 Pro. We also have a Minelab SD2200v2.

I would recommend that you  read this link. It's a little old and might be a little outdated but it should answer a lot of questions.
