Mercury use?

Has anybody tried using Mercury in a blue bowl setup? I tried a few drops in the blue bowl and it seems like it would work good. Its heavy and stays at the bottom of the bowl. Also it just swirls around the bottom catching any gold powder that may be there.  Now just need to make a tort to burn it off and recycle the mercury.

Any comments or suggestions?

  • How about charging Mercury? Is it really neccessary? I know you can take a beaker of water with mercury at the bottom. Add salt then put a wire in the mercury then one at the top just in the salt water mixture then hook up to a 9volt battery then wait. But just wondering how much of a difference it really makes?

    • Being unscientifically minded and mechanically challenged, I've got to ask you, HUH? What the heck would that do? I am so curious right now and ya gotta help me out, because if it's simple enough and not too hard to dumb down to my level of expertice, then I'd really like to know! That would be electrically charging a metal but to what purpose? Would it cause any fumes? This really sounds interesting!

    • I do not see how this would make a differance. Gold has a positive charge and a natural Afenity for mercury.
  • A word of caution when using a retort with a cast iron heating compartment. Don't get it hot enough to melt the gold-it will absorb into the cast, and you won't get it back without crushing it to powder. Don't ask me how I know this.  Ted

    • Hey Ted. I think I might have an inkling to what you are saying ?;~) Again you caught me not being specific enough! You are absolutely right! Do not make it glow! Of course if you use Gaz it is easy to get it too hot and you do run the risk of getting it to absorb into the cast iron. Not a good idea. If you have patience and a broad head on your torch, you shouldn't have much problem getting the HG out and not overheating the gold with regular propane.

      • Dan: I used acetalene/oxygen torch, and got it waaay to hot, and if you ever tried to pulverise a 2in iron pipe cap, you got an idea of what I'm talking about.   Ted

        • One of those "Aw poop!" moments, huh?

  • dan i agree with you a 100% but i thought some of the members might like to see some other ways to recover the gold

i am more in faver of useing a retort

    • I agree with you Ken. I liked what he was selling and I definitely could see a use in it if I used a lot of amalgamation but heck, I haven't really found enough to need more than a retort. Ya never know, this could be the year!
