How has the economy affected your prospecting?

In my case my position at work was eliminated and so i have been unemployed since Oct. and did not start getting unemployment till Jan, This has caused me to use up all my savings and my 401k... There are lots of jobs in my area but i can not live on 7-8 dollars an hour...This has pretty much put a hold on my prospecting till i get back on my feet.... The good side is i get to spend a lot of time with my wife...Hopefully the economy will take a turn for the better and better jobs will become available.....I guess i will just have to wait and see what Oboma does....

  • In my neck of the woods things have slowed down quite a bit. Lots of people have moved out of the area to seek work elsewhere. I have had to go from building 4 to5 custom homes to 1 to 2 homes and more remodeling and whatever work I can get. As far as prospecting goes all of the places I go are within 50 miles. So it is not a big killer as far as costing to much money to go out and prospect.(Except for the beer) I wish I could make a living at prospecting though. Nothing like being in woods next to the creek, listening to the birds and looking for that elusive big nugget. I know a few guys around here that make a living prospecting. Some in the creek and some metal detecting. I'm always seeking prospecting knowledge from the oldtimers and younger folks also.
  • Well, don't know if any of the cut backs hurt my job.....haven't had one since May 08. I'm a truck driver and heavy equipment operator by trade but just got tired of bein tired of workin for someone else. Guess if I really have to I'll pick up another job just to put beans and bacon on the table, but it hasn't gotten to that point yet. Puttin whats left of my money in this prospectin. Figure I'll work this as a job, but for me. Don't see how I can't manage to pull in at least a half oz a week if I work it as a buisness. 10 hour days 6 a week, or 7. If I can do that, that'll give me a couple ozs. a month and that'll by groceries and pay the lot rent. And if not, I'll move off the lot and "rough it". No hook ups, but have an onboard generator and can dig a laterine dump pit. Hauled my own water before too. So anyway, that's my story. Not gonna let this "recession" thing slow me down. There's been millionaires made in the past during recessions and will again!
  • Cut backs?, me too. Down to 4 day weeks, but at least I'm still workin'.
With 3 day weekends, I'm in high gear getting ready to head for the Sierra Nevada mountains and streams. Only about 40 min. away from great prospecting areas.
My best to y'all, hang in there. It will get better. No thanks to the Prez!
  • Yup sounds like I'm preaching to the choir. Guess instead I'll just sing along.
Last paycheque for me was June 31 / 08 then spent the best part of 08 summer in the hospital.
SO ---this summer looks a wee bit better health wise --- SO I plan to swing past the home place once a week or so to mow the lawns and restock on ken food and kibble for the wee beast and then off to the gold streams to see how much micro dust can be found.
  • We hopefully your situation i getting better. I have been in your situation in the past. Reach out if you want to discuss. I am looking for someone to run around checking the pay per play spots around our area, I will pay if you want to run with, the wife hates it, my son is super in to it (7 years old) but he is happy if I bring him back some shiny stuff.
  • Hey!, Herschel, you stole my line. It's true, Ohmama's bs is so transparent every time he talks the market drops 200 points. Been saying that for about a week. Told a friend this morning, "Waiting to see how far the market drops today, Ohmama talked this weekend". Soon as it opened it was down 1.5%. He's keeping gold nice and high though, and I expect in 6 mo. to a year he'll make prospecting really appealing.
  • Whatever Obama does will have a negative effect on the stock market. Every time he opens his mouth, the market goes down. That ain't good!

  • im out of work too ,got laid off in December but i have been getting unemployment from arizona and california so i get the max witch isn't much but my rent is cheap and i don't have major bills i have been building my own stuff to prospect made a sluice , suction sniper , and gas vacum im going at least once a week to work a river in julian and my secret spot .im making the best of my free time i guess but i cant afford to really do much either it sucks
  • The economy affect on my prospecting? Working in the restaurant 15 hours a day/6days a week, about 10 on my day "off". Get just enough time to do a couple of test pans a week, because my prospecting is all right here. I can be panning within a few minutes. The restaurant is actually gaining business even though the town is a pure mining town and half of the mine has been laid off over the last 4 months. So my real "gold" is still coming from the old work like a slave method. How has the economy affected prospecting here in general? People all over the hills, fressh tracks and holes all over the place. Most people from right here though. Places that were worked for bean money in the Great Depression. Most will either not find anything, or find out how much work it is for little gold, and give up quick. Used to never see anyone else with a gold pan. Now the hills are alive with the sound of digging.
  • Sorry to hear about your job loss Abearzz! I believe that things will turn around in the Southeast faster than they will anywhere else.

Are you a journeyman? I wondered whether you had applied at my old alma mater...TVA?
