Help with rockID

When I get the chance to get out with my little girl she always brings home "pretty" rocks. Just curious if you guys can help ID a couple of them. I believe this is a vein of rose quartz. Or is it something else?

And this one I have no idea. Its hard and doesn't flake at all. It's like holographic or 3D when wet and in the sun.

Any ideas? Thanks.

  • Wow....2012...old thread lol. But if memory serves me right that was a piece of mica schist.

  • bob on the rock with the ribbon on it I believe your right on that being rose quartz, and on the other to hard to tell with that pic any way to do a tighter picture and a direct up load off of your camera into here then a second site to go too? if you get a chance and see Wolfie bounce it off of him.

  • That's called Schist. It's native rock before it releases the Garnet. And Garnets come in all colors except red, if it's red it's a Ruby.

  • The rock in the first picture is a feldspar vein in granite. It's very common here in the west.

It's a good idea to check feldspar closely for moonstone which is rare and prized.

  • Thanks...good info. I was thinking about getting a used gold bug 2 or similar with taxes this year and spend some time nugget hunting. I never see anyone there with a detector and figured it might be worth the effort. But when i get one of those rocks in almost every shovel full, no wonder there isnt anyone there with a detector. I've only used one a couple times but seems like a good way to get out and look for valuables without having to shovel and classify all day.

  • I been looking up basalt and havent seen anything that looks like mine. It's silver with black specks. I know it's not worth anything because this stuff is everywhere. Just curious what it is. I have a short video of it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7K7PCOlb7PE

And how do I get pics and vids to show up in a post. Not just a link?

  • In New York we have granite full of garnet. Looks very much like your picture. I have a rock that looks exactly like the second picture. It is curved and heavy for its size.
