  • I have not had any of the silver fire assayed.  A buddy had one rock (153 lbs) that was 400 oz silver/ton.  I had a few pieces tested with a VRF which tells you what the rocks contain but are no so good determining the %.  Most had gold, silver, cobalt, nickel, copper, platinum and other PGM's.  Basically, I just look at the samples by sight and what the metal detector tells me.  Typically, the outside of a sample is where the rock fractured and the metals get better inside.  If a sample is sliced, the silver shows up (especially when wet) as bright.  Nickel will quickly tarnish to a copper colour and rocks that have been in the ground for 100 years will have a green bloom on the outside.  Cobalt will have a pink bloom.  The silver on the outside of a rock will usually feel rough (like maybe tin foil) and these spots can be cleaned up by rubbing or dremmel carbide bit to expose the silver.  Basically, the silver in the area was so good that they did not mine unless it was 100/oz to the ton.

As a side note, I used to bow hunt north of you in PA on state land (Tioga).  A number of years ago, I bought a 3" dredge/high banker from somebody down by you.  First thing I did was really clean the carpet and got some very fine colors, so there is gold in them hills....
