Harbor Freight 79cc 37g.p.m opinions.

So im looking at buying a pump from Harbor Freight   http://www.harborfreight.com/15-79cc-1-in-gas-engine-clear-water-pump-37-gpm-69747.html   and i was wondering if anyone has had any experience with this pump, I am thinking of using it to run a KEENE 2" suction nozzle and just looking for input on this combo.

  • Hey Don

I got the keene 2inch dredge, its a great wee dredge a bit expensive butt it real easy to move and store as it all comes to bits .the only thing i would say is get the blow up floats as they wont slide down your driveway lol. Definitely the way forward as it catches fine gold really well .

    Hope this helps

  • Don, an update, here is the Keene page for their 2" backpack dredge. http://www.keeneeng.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Store_Code=kes&Screen=....  You might note they use a 2.5 HP 2" gas pump, 100 GPM and 160 feet of head pressure.  That is 6,000 Gallons per hour at  approx 69.26 p.s.i. (1 p.s.i. = 2.31 feet of Head Pressure). I would suggest using that as a baseline for your calculations.

  • Dad has the 1 inch HF ... It wouldn't run a traditional 10 inch wide metal riffled box. Not enough flow to push the rocks larger then 1/4" over the riffles.

I ended up setting him up with an 11"drop riffle sluice to use as a highbanker.. it works but don't think it would be enough to run a dredge. A 1 1/2 nozzle would be too much for it.

  • suction nozzle.

  • power jet or a nozzal

  • being as im putting together a 2" backpack, weight is a big thing as i am planning to pack this thing in. how would 2220gph do with a 10"x36" box with only 6' of hose? what is the minimum flow considered to be "usable" for a box of this size?

  • Being that we all love "Doc" let me give his input: http://goldprospectingforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=1296.  Ken is absolutely right, but depending on the type of dredge nozzle your using and it's diameter, lift is all about head pressure.  The deeper the hole, the more pressure at the head will determine the lift to your sluice in a dredge.  Harbor Freight pumps are wonderful for pumping water.   Here is another reference link: http://www.onestopfire.com/head.htm

  • doc loves them

  • First off I was not aware harbor freight has an 1 1/2 pump  and 2nd depends on the size of the sluice. The 1 inch has 45.5 psi and 2 inch has 42.5 psi. I use the 2 in 9640 gph and run a 2 1/2 inch high banker / dredge nozzle. Don't think the 1 inch would work even though it has psi but not enough water flow only 2220 gph. Depends on the size of the sluice. This is just my thoughts on this but you can do want you see fit.

  • it depends a lot on the pressure port on the nozzle then go wit a pump that has that size outlet on the pump don`t go with a smaller pressure hose outlet on the pump then what is on the nozzle it takes a combination of both pressure and volume for a nozzle or power jet to work right also it depends on how wide and long your sluice box is the wider and longer the box the more water you need i run a 2.5 inch banker dredge with a 1.5 intake port on the nozzle i come off the pump witch is a 2 inch then i use a reducer to get to a 1.5 at the nozzle this gives me a good volume of water with a balance of pressure i also use the same hose set up to run the banker with no problems
