Gravel mining?

I happen to know of a gravel co. that mines gravel and gold is a bi-product. Question,... Are we allowed to mine for the gravel on our claims? Valueable metals and gems, yes, but just plain ol' rock? I haven't been able to find any info on the BLM site.

  • If you are talking about doing this on federal land, then (of course) you will need a permit. They don't give anything away. Usually, the permit costs are minimal, though. If you are just looking at personal use (ie, not selling the stuff), then you can probably get a free-use permit. Just call your local BLM office and inquire.

    Good luck!
  • mr steel pan, i know one of those 2. their wet plant crusher and hot plant show up on geo communicator as a millsite. the old lagrange pit. they must own patented ground, but mill on a millsite claim. what they must have is a princely reclamation bond. and who knows what else in the way of financial securities.and yes, they run centrifugal concentrators in the wet plant circuit. got to see one emptied out once.wish i owned a gravel pit! there was couple pounds fines flakes, pickers etc.part of that old mines waterworks included 27 miles of flumes/ditches connected by a hardrock tunnel 9000 feet long.talk about expenses.
    • think i see some logic here. you could possibly sell a defunct dredging claim as an aggregate source.but there would have to be one H of alot of ag there.ag ops deal constantly w/bonding.say, if there were lots a ag, AND there were big project nearby.hmmm.
      • One of my pards is a general contractor. He's the one who came up with the thought.
Landscape rocks, pathway sands and gravel, to rip-rap and road gravel.
Heck, the Chinese dug up LOTS of rocks. Just bring in a skip loader and dump truck.
Load it up and haul it off.
I'll prob spiff my place up a bit. LOL
