Jane and I get alot of enjoyment from prospecting ! We often bring home and extra from natures bounty So far this year it has been Figs from a wild fig tree, Hazelnuts from the Creek they go great in Short Bread, And we have about six pounds of Blackberrys frozen so far not to mention the ones that have all ready found their way into pies and cobblers, later in the year the wild grapes and apples will come home with us.

  • I remember very fine thorns on the branches hard to get out of your fingers !

    • I put my berries in a screened colander, shake it over an open flame, and that takes care of the stickers.

Ya, those thorns and stickers stay with ya a while if ya get poked.

  • The ones I remember from Iowa started green and sour but went to dark purple almost black as they ripened ad sweetened.

    • Mine go to a dark red, somewhat purple.

      No thorns/spines though, right?

  • The Wild Gooseberries I get have thorns on the vines/branches AND the berries.

I understand the the variety back East don't have them.

My berries are red, I understnd that the ones out East are green?  89.gif idunno.gif

  • My granny used to make gooseberry pie/cobbler! She'd put the sugar to them. Mmmmmm!
  • I discovered Wild Goose Berries on my claim.

I can up about 16 qts each year.

They make a great Christmas gift for my Cuz back in W. VA .

I always send him at least one, sometimes two.

I hold back 12 for me to last the year 'til I can some more.

  • Well I'm glad winter is over in this part of the world and Spring rains are starting to let up so it will be time to head up in to Trinity County where a lot of our wild Harvests come from. we are down to one 1 gallon bag of apples and one of black berries in the freezer after a winter of many pies and cobblers. Seven 1 gallon bags of wild grapes came out of the freezer Monday and have been cooked down to about 5 cups of concentrate and will be made in to jelly today .   So now the cupboard is bare and its time for fresh greens to start hitting the table as I'm sure we will find them in our favorite prospecting spots and if we get real lucky maybe some MORELS  YUMMM !
