Breaking in new gold pans

I got my new gold pans in today. I've read about "seasoning" or "preparing" new pan but there's a lot of people saying do this and other saying don't do this. Like using very lite sandpaper or Ajax powder. I know about using dish soap to clean the oils from manufactured process. Whats your guys thoughts and opinions on this topic.

  • I don't worry about any sanding,  I just use the dang thing.

I put my pans over a fire 'til they are a dark orange all over.

That burns off any oils and somewhat tempers the pan

and now they are more resistant to rust too.

    JMHO,....

  • I use the scotch bright pad on mine and they do well. The green non stick cookware pad, if someone does not know.  Hey it is possible. lol

  • I prefer course grit sand paper. 220 would be fine. Any micro burs that remain will quickly be stripped off in use.

  • I would use the fine because it will get more scratches when you use it the first time and so on and so on

  • I have 220 500 1000 and 1200 grit sandpaper. Which would you suggest I use on my pan after giving them a good soap bath?
  • I have done it to all my pans

  • I use river gravels and sand. Works for me in all my pans.

  • Is this in all your pans Tim or just your prospecting pans and not final cleanup
  • for me I like my pans scratched up big time I believe it helps hold that super small gold

  • Like Tim said first wash real well using dawn dish soap, then a fine sand paper or scoop up some river gravel and sands, and then rub the gravel really good in the pans on all the surfaces. Do this rubbing for 5 to 10 minutes until the pan is roughed up real good.  Then your pans should be ready to use.
