Went back to the cellar hole that gave me the 1848 large cent 2 days ago. The ground was a bit more solid than I hoped for but managed to dig some targets. I found this lock plate that has me a little baffled. It's obvious where the key goes but what are the other 2 holes above it for?
Then I found this little padlock. The body of it measures 1 3/16" wide and 1 1/16" high. Wife thinks the symbol in the middle of it looks like an urn. If there are any lock experts here I could really use some help with an ID and date for this cool lock.
And here is the best find of the day! An 1865 2 cent with good detail. I'm scared to clean it as I never thought I would find one and don't want to ruin it. I got a feeling that next year when it's thawed out, this cellar is gonna give up more goodies. Here's the 2 cent....
Another GREAT day!

great job Bob, with the lock plate the top hole is where the doorknob went in the middle whole is where a little stud stuck out and you could move it up or down, and it didn't move much and it was like a safety lock and no key could on lock the door as long as it was in the up position hope this helps. The lock will take a little research on that one
awesome buddy you are doing great keep swinging buddy Tim
2 cents were only made from 1864 to 1873. I love this coin for the 1865 date. Busy year in US history.
WOW very nice Bob!!
