The stolen 25 lb gold bar is missing, mother & son murdered in Montana, one suspect is being questioned may be released, another unknown person (about 60 year old) was last one seen with the mother.

If someone tries to sell a large amount of gold (Apx $500,000) contact Powell County Sheriff's Office Mt.

In memory of Harold Mitchell. He was owner of mine at Mosquito Fork Bridge, Near Chicken, Alaska. Harold was from Baraga Michigan which in the upper peninsula of Michigan. He passed away in 2009 at his home.

Original owners were in the history books under the name Bob and Molly McCombs. They were the first to frieght supplies into this region of Alaska. On week of June 16, 2008. Harold Mitchell and myself and others were walking this crane down the Taylor Highway. This was a slow process and Harold was piloting the van as to warn others this crane was walking or coming down the road. This was a 4 1/2 hour walk as this was a big crane. Traffic was minimal and everyone was there to help. As this crane was walking on the still dirt road I listed to the crane and I asked Harold if he had pen and paper and he said yes and that is when this little poem came to life. And now I again share with everyone. Sharon

Pans!

I don't know how many times people have come up to me and said, "All you really need is a pan to find gold." Technically that's true. All you really need to find gold is a pan. At some time, even with machinery, you will probably pick up a gold pan. Maybe not at the start, but more than likely at the end.

However, gold is a numbers game. The more dirt you process, the more gold you will find. Unless you hit the Mother lode, and are digging nuggets of gold. You are dealing with something much smaller. From flour to flakes to pickers. (Sounds like a double play team in baseball. “5-4-3 Double play!” I can almost hear the PA announcer.)

That’s where machinery comes into play. However, this isn’t about machinery, it’s about pans. Probably since the dawn of time, or at least when man first discovered gold, there have been gold pans. Sluices made of gold, were discovered in King Tut’s tomb. I would imagine there were gold pans made of real gold as well. But even before that, most likely pans were made out of slices of a tree trunk dished out. Wood has one problem, it swells, shrinks and cracks. So maybe the first real gold pans, as we know them, were made during the Bronze age.

However, where you find relics from gold rush times, you will find wooden pans. They could be turned out on machinery run from water wheels driven by long belts. Someone had a bright idea to go to the maker of a Knights armor and turn out gold pans. These would have been made of iron, as a Knights armor were iron plate. Eventually steel came into play, and I’m sure steel gold pans followed.

A mixture of steel and wood pans have been found from California to Australia. The Chinese prospectors are credited with introducing the riffle to the Gold pan. And you can still see a form of it today in modern steel pans. Prospectors really like steel gold pans because it served two purposes. First, of course, it was a gold pan. Second, it was their dinner plate. The pan could withstand heat, they ate off of it, cleaned it up and go back to prospecting. Maybe old time prospectors were the original , “Multi-taskers”?

Back in the mid-70’s, 1970’s that is, I’m not THAT old! I started with pie pans, which I liberated from my Mom’s cupboards. (Liberated sounds so much better than just helped myself, without ask asking. IE: Stole!) I had already been bitten by the Gold bug at age 10. However, I had no clue on how to actually find gold. (My first discovery was Pyrite, that I thought was gold.) I met a couple of guys prospecting the Whitewater River in Southern Indiana. They both had steel pans with grooves formed in the sides. They had found these in the back of “Popular Mechanics” magazine. (Might have been “Popular Science.” It’s been a long time for my memory.)

They are the ones that told me to,, “go get your Mother’s pie pans.” They had a wooden homemade rocker box lined with Shag carpeting! (This was the 70’s.) Back then, I didn’t know anything about flour gold. I thought all gold were nuggets, or at least pickers. So, I’d sift through sand from the river looking for gold I could see. I pretty much never did.

Fast forward to today. Today we have gold pans, still in steel. However, now there’s copper and the most one used are plastic. Plastic has opened up a world of new shapes, sizes and colors. (Again, another Triple Play team?) Today’s modern plastic pans come in round, square, rectangle, triangle, hexagon, U-shaped, to name the popular ones. And just about every color. Blue, green, red, black, purple, maroon, white and pink! Blue and green are the most popular, followed by black. Green and blue will make your gold stand out as well as your black sands. Black pans will make your gold “pop” out, but will hide fine black sands making final clean up difficult. The other colors, have their fans. I like blue, maroon and red for final clean ups.

Green is the most popular, but if you suffer from color blindness, then you want to stick with blue. Blue pretty much is still blue, throughout most color blindness. However, green can show up as various colors, including shades of yellow. They also come with various sizes of riffles. From no riffles to quite large riffles.

Sizes. Plastic pans range from 10” to 16”. Again, typically, bigger pans are used to work off the dirt and gravel and smaller pans are used for final clean ups. 16” pans can be a hand full, especially loaded with dirt and gravel. 14” can be as well, but is still easier to work off. 10” pans you can use one hand, but you’re limited to the amount of over burden you can work off at one time.

So, there you have it. Most small scale prospectors have many pans in there inventory. Lately there seems to be 1 - 2 new pans coming out every year. They always seem to have their supporters and their opposition. Like I always say, it’s what works best for you. I always seem to end up buying the new ones and trying them at least a few times.

I love the Fortymile and I always will. We are soon approaching the week of my late husbands death. We were on our way to cabin back in the deep heart of mining country where there is no one and believe you me, I truly understand the depth of that. Gold mining has taken several things I loved from me. And if you let it, it will take things from you too and it wont ask permission. Death comes in many different way and Jim and I had talked about dying back here in this mining country but we never really believed it would happen to me or us.

On the morning of March 8th 2007 my now late husband and I left Tok, Alaska at a -50 degrees outside. We never came back the same. He died in my arms on the top of Mt Witherspoon, Alaska on March 10th, 2007. If our mining partner hadnt been with us at the time I would have sit there and died with him.

Saturday I went to the Hill solo and had been prospecting for about 2 1/2 hours when I heard some one Yelling Hello. Not real comon to run in to any one up there I walked back to the Truck to find my Son Heath and his friend Angelo (both Members on this site) had driven down from Albany Oregon for a suprise visit.

They are both New to prospecting so we spent the day cleaning Cracks and crevises and talking the geology of gold

Gold was found in every pan !

Crazycrusher Impact Mill finally finished!

I finally completed the long awaited Crazycrusher Impact Mill. Finding the time to develop it was the main issue. This unit is the 2nd prototype. The first was just a mock up to test the functionality of it, and then went ahead with the perceived changes and built this second unit.

Now comes the task of finding the time to take it out and do test runs. Capacity needs to calculated, like how much it can handle (based in tonnage or yardage per hour). Looking for any “weak” spots that would need to be re-designed and implemented in to the 3rd unit, which will be the marketable unit... if it is taken to market at all. If not, at least I will have a nice impact mill to crush viable ores from old tailing piles.

But of course, I'll use the hand operated Crazycrusher for testing those piles. Since the Impact Mill weighs in at 120 pounds, (Mill, Stand and Engine) I don't see the need to haul it out in the field to do sampling, that's what the Hand Operated model is for... for “Prospecting”. The Impact Mill is for “Mining” production of ores, albeit on a small scale.

I'm excited with the features implemented in the design, and came with a lot of pre-thought of what “I” would want in a 14” impact mill with a 4” feed, easy open door, bottom output, easy change hammers, and more. I want the output powder to run directly in to the top of the Gold Cube. Crush a ton, take home a cup of cons!

Hopefully, if we go to market with it, it could be as early as this springtime!

If you are proficient with your metal detector, you may want to let the local Law Enforcement know.

If you feel that you have mastered your metal detector, or at least feel really comfortable using it. Let your Law Enforcement know that you are willing to help if they ever need it. Why you ask? (Go ahead and ask why.)

Law Enforcement from time to time needs help. Usually, there will be at least one officer with a metal detector on the squad. However, if they are trying to find a stray bullet, or other item, one detector can't cover all the ground very fast. That's where you come in. Send a formal letter to the Chief of Police, the Sherrif and even if there is a State Police barracks in your town to the head Officer in charge. Let them know that you are more than willing to help if they ever need it. Years ago, I even included a nice photograph of some of my finds.

I'll give you a case in point. There's a man I was introduced to, who bought a Side Scan Sonar system. He had visions of using it in the Summer searching the lake he lived on for sunken motors, or just general treasure hunting in the lake. He went around to the Marinas, and asked if he could put up a flier offering his services for items lost in the lake. One Winter day, he got a call from the local Sherrif's office. One of the Deputies had remember seeing his flier and wondered if he could help them out. He readily agreed and loaded his equipment on their boat and went in search of what they were looking for. (I'm sorry, I don't remember what it was, but he found it.) The divers went into the frigid waters and retrieved it.

Now, not only is he called into help the local Sheriff's Dept. But the Police and and State Highway Patrol. All season, they call on him to use his equipment. There was a missing girl and the State Highway Patrol presumed that the might have drowned in the lake. They found her car parked near the water's edge. So they called him in to start his search. He laid out his grid pattern, and soon were searching the lake's bottom for any sign of human life. They even had a boat with Cadavor dogs in it searching. The dogs got a hit out in the water and he was called over with his Sonar. It wasn't the missing girl, but it was a car. Probably had been there for 20 years resting on the bottom. The dogs were going crazy! The car was pretty far out into the lake, but the divers were able to hook a cable to it and with the help of a crane, drag it to shore. Inside the trunk was the remains of another woman, long since passed away. They never did find the missing girl. I'm not even sure that they found out who was locked away in the trunk of that car.

Don't you think that he has built up a good repore with the Law Enforcement Agencies? I'm not saying you will find Jimmy Hoffa, but you maybe able to find a key piece of evidence! Please note: I would not do this if you just got your metal detector.

Early this Summer, I wanted to search a Grade School that had been closed. I pulled up with my van and metal detector. In the parking lot was a Deputy Sherrif's car. Not sure what the rules are in the town, I decided to go to him and ask if there was a problem if I searched the school grounds. I also handed him my business card. "Treasure Seekers International". It has my name, web-site, address even my e-mail on it. I told him who I was and that I wanted to search the school grounds and if there was a problem with that. He said that since the school was abandoned, they didn't like anyone to be on the grounds, due to vandalism. I expained that I wasn't there to cause any problems, and thanked him and I was ready to leave. He told me that he had about an hour of paperwork to do. That it would be alright it I searched while he was there.

I thanked him again, got my machine out of my van, and proceeded to search. I was really hamped in my efforts due to the long grass. (It was over a foot high and very thick!) After about 30 minutes, I hadn't found a thing. So I decided to pack it in. I went back to his cruiser and expained to the deputy that the high grass was making it very hard to search and almost impossible to dig. I thanked him and told him that I was going to go. He handed me back my business card, and I told him to keep it. That his Department should feel free to call me if they ever needed an area searched. Now I don't know if they ever will. However, if they do, I'll be there. (I'll also bring all of my machines just in case I run into long grass again.)

The worse that a Law Enforcement Agency can say is, "No thanks".

The Art of Prospecting.

This post is NOT going to tell you “how” to find gold, or what to look for, etc., but more so the finer details that some people may overlook or dismiss.

Gold itself will be again on the rise. Not to get all political and all, but the truth is it is politics that drives the price of gold up. You have the Obama Administration going to town with the Nations' credit cards, spending unheard of TRILLIONS, with the blessings of the House of Representatives who holds the very loose purse strings. You have the Private Federal Reserve doing Quantitative Easing (QE) and pumps billions in to the economy which only dilutes the money and devalues it, making the price of everything taking more “dollars” to purchase items. You have the shaky and uncertain Market where investors are cashing in stocks and bonds for gold.

Gold prices doubled in the first 4 years of the Obama administration, and perhaps will double again to $3,200. Time will tell. And then there is the matter of “Fractional Banking” practices, you know, selling each ounce of gold about 8 times, to 8 different buyers. What happens when those 8 people want their gold, or to even “see” the gold? When they realize they had been duped, well you can guess what could happen! Truth is, “If you can't hold the gold, you don't own the gold”.

Along with the rising price of gold comes the big corporate mining companies grabbing thousands of acres in mining claims to “sit on them”. Virtually locking the little guy out of getting their own claims. It's advisable that if you can file mineral claims, even for small “recreational” amounts of gold, it should be done more sooner than later, while you still have a chance to find something available.

I enjoy the “hunt”, be it placer or hard rock. I do both. In the world of ever controlling governments banning or limiting small dredge operations it is getting harder and harder to find those virgin river “glory holes” laden with the heavy yellow metal. What many forget to ask themselves is “where did the gold in the rivers come from?” The answer is normally “from above”. Veins and outcrops poke through, and eventually wear due to heat expansion and freezing water in the cracks eventually breaking up the quartz matrix and releasing the gold. That gold eventually washes down hill until it gets to a river where it slowly wears down and becomes lodged in a depression on the river bottom. I am sure there are tons to find, “if” one could actually dredge down to bedrock!

Over the past 150 years or so, the rivers have been so picked, and the surrounding hills have not had a chance to replenish the gold in the rivers. It could take a thousand years! You probably will not be around then, so the next best thing is to study up and look for “float gold”. That is, gold, probably still within its host of quartz, laying on the side of some hill. It broke from the outcrop and is on its' long journey downhill. The skill comes in by tracing the float back to the original source. The float gold will act like a pyramid, as you will find pieces closer together the further up the hill you go.

If you are lucky enough to find the source, and it has not fully decomposed yet, that outcrop poking through could lead to a very large and deep vein! SAMPLE... SAMPLE... SAMPLE....

Regardless of the method you use to sample the quartz, you will have to crush it down to a LEAST 100 mesh, and 200 to 300 would be even better. Like the old riddle “What's black and white and red all over?” Well is just might be some valuable ore! What's more, that quartz can also hold values in Silver ore, any of the Platinum group, and even copper, lead, zinc or any rare earth minerals. It's also said that the richest ores per ton contains the finest free-milling gold particulates!

It's far better to learn how to do simple field tests on crushed ores and know for a fact if it is worth paying for an assay to be done, than to blindly pay for dozens of assays that may turn out to be not worth the time or effort. But if you do find something promising, it's worth having a professional assay done and a claim filed.

If you are lucky enough to find a viable outcrop, you will have a few options after your claim is filed. (you will be filing a lode claim, not a placer claim). You can work what you can, going for the most valuable ore, the high grade stuff which will allow you to buy more and bigger tools to get in there, or you can sell or lease the claim to a company with the tools to do the job, but they will want to take a lot of core samples to see if it's worth the time and monetary expenditures.

To get started, and assuming your find is in a very remote area, it's advisable to have a utility quad to get to the area. You will need to haul in a small generator, an electric demolition hammer, and an impact mill. You can then run the hammer and quickly and easily break up the decomposing quartz to a size that will fit in the impact mill that will pulverize the rock quickly. Once that's accomplished, it's a matter of figuring out what you want to get out of your powdered ore and the best way to process it. There are dozens and dozens of ways, pending on what is in the powdered ores. Hopefully you will make enough to put in a road to your claim soon.

The Gold Cube will catch fine gold in the 100 mesh and finer in its vortex matting. Crushing to 100 mesh and finer with an impact mill will allow the prospector to run the powder through a Gold Cube

and after running a ton of rock, you will take home a cup of cons!

We think the Crazycrusher is just the tool to do the sampling with. Starting with a piece of ore the size of a chicken egg, with just a few passes you can reduce it to 100 mesh and finer, as fine as you want to take it down to with additional passes. At only 34 pounds, it's quite portable. No gas, no electricity. The ultimate in green technology and a must have when off the grid.

Sure, a pipe in a pipe, or a pestle and mortar works, but once some of the rock is turned to sand, well have you ever tried breaking a rock with a hammer when it's sitting on sand? Doesn't work too well.

Let the Ant be your prospecting partner!

Ant hills can be a good source for prospecting. Ants can dig down 2 to 4 feet, depending on the type of ant. As they dig, they bring up everything they can carry INCLUDING GOLD! Sure, it may be flake or flour gold, but gold nontheless, AND it's pre-classified for you!

Always use caution though, as some ants will "attack" and bite. You do not need to dig the whole thing up unless you find something promising. You can take a 1/4 or 1/8 of the mound, preferably on the down hill side (to help preserve the nest). If it's a large mound, it could be 4 feet deep, if a small mound, maybe 1 to 2 foot deep. Scoop some of the sand off the top and pan it carfully, looking for black sands and colors. Then pan another level from the middle, and then again from the bottom of the mound. This way you will have some indication of the depth that the colors came from.

Remember, what is on the top of the mound came from the deepest part of the nest and what is on the bottom of the mound came from the shallow part of the nest.

Sometimes you will find abandoned ant hills. I assume the queen died or something and the rest just headed out in search of a new queen. These hills, there is no problems digging them up if you findcolors. If it's an active colony, AND you actually DO find good color and want to dig up the whole area, remember... it could go down a few feet and perhaps spread out in any direction under ground, so you may be looking at a cubic yard of material. Break out the dry washer or re-circulating sluice and have at it! Let the little guys do the preliminary prospecting for you!

If an active colony, you may want to kill the nest before you dig, or you may end up with a LOT of ant bites! I've seen ants take down a frog, and a scorpion, and a baby Mohave Green rattle snake! No fun having ants in yer pants!

My Ghost Story

I've been busy gathering up pictures to download to a digital frame to hang up at my store.

One of the photos I scanned and downloaded was of me, diving with my Garrett XL 200 Sea Hunter. I know, the XL 500 was a much better model. The XL 200 was only made like one year, but when I bought it in the mid-80's I didn't know it. All I knew was that I heard Mel Fisher, yes THAT Mel Fisher, said that the Garrett Sea Hunter was the best metal detector he had ever used. The photo was from the late 80's.

This story deals with the early 90's. I was scuba diving off the Florida Keys. It was a Dive Vacation that I found through 'Skin Diver' Magazine. I took along my Garrett Sea Hunter since I was going to be searching for sunken treasure. After some orientation the first day, we actually dove around 2 that afternoon. In an hour of diving, all I found was junk.

I said that this was a ghost story, so I guess I should get to it. That second day we dove, I was we, as there were myself and five other divers. I was the "old man" of the bunch. (I'm always the oldest. LOL) I was at about 40-45 feet underwater searching with my Sea Hunter again. My attention was firmly planted on the sea floor beneath me. About 20 minutes into the dive, I was between 2 rock outcroppings. My Fellow divers were out of my line of sight.

I large shadow passed over me. It was long and I looked up, but didn't see anything. At 45 feet there is still some light filtering through from the sun over head. At first, I figured it was one of the other divers. But as I popped up over the rocks, they were scattered over the area. I passed it off and continued my treasure hunting. When we surfaced and regrouped at the dive boat, I asked if anyone else had seen the shadow. Of course, we joked about a Mermaid to a shark to a cloud blotting out the sun. (The cloud actually made the most sense, except it was long and narrow. And there were very few clouds in the sky.)

I never did discover what the shadow was. Neither did I find any sunken treasure. I did have a great time diving, a little drinking and kicking back with a great group of people. Not to mention, anytime I could trade my shirt and tie for swim trunks and polo, priceless.

Where you should look and try to find gold

Where to look to find gold

You will find gold in different spot in streams. Water is the primary agent in the creation of most placer deposits. Moving water can contain huge amounts of sentiment materials, by way of fine silt to large river rocks, especially in the course of run-off time periods. When freed from the particular mountain by means of weathering, gold is usually added to stream waters along with rock debris, and it is moved down by way of the stream. Where streams meander you can find gold, if it goes over falls you can find gold, or are deflected around rocks is good place to find gold, if a drop in water velocity takes place you can often times find gold, and the gold drops out there. Extended agitation by way of water causes gold to settle all the way down through the gravel right up until reaching bedrock or an impenetrable clay layer that is where you find gold nuggets. These concentrations are known as pay streaks that would be nice to find gold pay streaks.

Best chances to find gold

The best locations to uncover gold exist wherever turbulence change to slower-moving waters flow. Check out slower moving water down below rapids and waterfalls, deepened pools, and the downstream section involving big chunks of rock. On the inside turns of meanders, upstream ends with fine sand as well as 'point" bars are good locations for you to pan fine gold, which can be replaced each year during runoff. Bedrock crevices or pockets acting as natural riffles can accumulate gold. Scoop out there and pan material from these places. Spring, very early summer months, and just before freeze within the fall are wonderful points during the year to go panning. Water is low and gold-bearing rock is exposed which makes it easier to find gold. To lessen resource damage, restrict excavating to active, unvegetated stream gravels.

Tools you will need to find gold

The basic equipment is quite simple and requires only a minimum investment. A gold pan is most important. Metal pans were used by early prospectors; modem versions are plastic with built-in riffles. In a pinch, frying pans and even hub caps will work. New metal pans generally come with a coating of grease and should be cleaned thoroughly by heating over an open fire. The pan will rust, but some rust is beneficial for collecting fine gold and help find gold.

Suggested equipment to find gold.

gold pan (plastic with riffles or metal); 14" size is best.
shovel to loosen gravel from creek bottom.
grizzly pan with 1/2-inch holes in bottom; this pan helps separate coarse gravel, speeding up the panning process.
magnifying lens (at least 10X power) to identify minerals.
sluice box, approximately 3 feet long; (construct or obtain commercially; aluminum version is available.)
tweezers for picking up gold; a dry finger will also work.
small magnet for separating out magnetic black sands.
small glass vials to hold gold.
rubber gloves to protect hands from cold water.
rubber boots to keep feet dry while wading in creeks.

Over the years my gold pans have served me well, as a hat..as a plate…(it holds alot of chunky soup, although the peas get stuck in the riffles…the potatoes are easily panned out)…and as a frisbee when bored, but after using alot of gadgets and toys for finding gold, one usually ends up right back at the panning tub for a final cleanup, so don’t forget to always keep at-least a gold pan in your recreational vehicle just in case you come across a spot that just looks too good to NOT have gold in it, because its cheap and doesn’t take up much space behind your seat and its easy to use, and don’t forget there are plenty of articles and websites online that can teach you how to pan for gold, as well as video’s on “you-tube” under “gold panning” But its up to you to practice your gold panning, so get out there and pan for gold !! with a little practice you’ll be a gold panning pro in no time!
