working a dry wash

Hello All,

I will be doing some work this summer in a dry wash the claim runs six miles up a drywash with a small creek, most if not all of the cold has been found outside of the creek. so my question is what do you look for if you are going to work a drywash? I would like to have a starting point.

  • I am currently working a new dry wash.    I look first for a spot that is close to bedrock or hardpan.    Do all the material there and vacume.    Check to see how it did.    Then I look for areas with big rocks on or close to that and do around them....then pull/tip over the big rocks and do under them.    Many times I do a trench across the wash to see which side of the wash the gold is running (pay streak)....then follow the gold.   If there is gold in the banks of the dry wash it should be concentrated in the creek bottom.    Black sand can also give some idea to where the gold lies as well.    Many times I check where black sand concentrates in a wash.    But my feeling is to get down to the bedrock or hardpan where the gold can be concentrated, otherwise you can work a lot of material with little results.   Get a heavy chain....a good strong nylon tow strap, and a very strong come-along with a built in block and tackle.....and once you work around a big rock you can tip it over.     Unless the overburden in the creek is real rich you don't want to be running a lot of it.  Good luck
