  • I preach "times 2" 4x2=8 mesh  8x2=16  16x2=32 so not to exceed I use 30 mesh.  so the answer I would have is 8 and 16.  By not going over 2 times, the smallest piece of gold in that batch will out-weigh the largest piece of garbage.

    • Mike,

      Thanks for the quick reply.

A bit more info, I am panning down to +30, then running -30, -50 and -100 material thru a blue bowl.  I presently am using a kitchen strainer, which I estimate to be about 16 mesh in the gap, but I wanted something 5 gallon sized to go with my other classifiers.

If I followed you correctly you advised that starting with a 4, the next step should be 8, then 16, then 32/30, then 60 then 100....roughly, right?   Anything larger than 4 I am just rinsing the dust/dirt off and running a MD over in case I have a piece of quartz or something with some entrapped gold.   Am I on the right track?

I am a bit of a greenhorn to this despite my 71 years of age.   Having fun in my "golden" years though.

      Jay
