What a Saturday I had. First off, I jinxed myself Thursday when I posted I was heading to a new spot to prospect and leaving work early because it was a bad bad bad morning. As I was walking out the door and  my coworker told me that a server went down in one of the schools. After about 30 minutes of panic I was on my way to replace what I was hoping was a bad power supply. Of course the server was at a school 55 miles away. By the time I got there and installed the new part (borrowed from another server) and drove back the day was about over. Saturday I woke to a hard rain storm. I had plans to head out to another new area with my wife’s boss and his 9 year old son as he has also been bitten by gold fever. I got a call from him and he and his son were on their way. So after sitting in the house for some time his son announces that it had quit raining and as any eager 9 year old is was excited and ready to get some dirt. We decided to take my jeep. I had just moved it earlier that morning. I went out and the dang thing would not engage the starter. So we took Johns truck. Drove just a few miles from the house not real excited about getting wet but oh well. We drove along the creek until we found a spot I thought might have some potential. I had my water gear on already so just walked to the creek toting some of our tools along with. I was shoveling out of the creek into the classifiers and John was running them. His son started to get pretty bored with nothing to do. So I grabbed him and brought him over to the other side of the creek by us and had him checking the pile from the classified material. Just to make sure we didn’t miss a nugget or something. Well that lasted about 10 minutes until he was bored again. So I grabbed a shovel full from the creek for him and put it in his pan. I told him to pick out the big rocks and that we would use this as our test pan. After a few more minutes he said there was nothing in the pan. I asked if he wanted me to check and he handed the pan to me. So I panned it down to the black sands. I swished the water around a little and was stunned. I believe my comment was HOLY SHIIIT we have gold. John looked in the pan and said I second that! We had about 15-20 flakes. So needless to say we started digging with more spirit. As I was waiting for John to classify a load I noticed a log across the creek. My hip has been killing me so I decided to go sit on the log. I was sitting there for a couple minutes when all of a sudden the earth moved. AW CRAP I am going in. With feet and arms skyward I plunged into the creek that has ice on its edges. After catching my breath from being so shocked I stood up and began to laugh. John was trying to grab for me when I went in but was about half a second too late. He couldn’t believe I just sank to my neck in freezing water and was laughing. It was to dang funny to me to not laugh. So we worked for about another 20 minutes until I started to see gray and shake. I told him I had enough. We loaded up of 1.25 5 gallon buckets of classified material and headed to my house. Once there and thawing out my hands and stripping off my soaked clothes and getting into a warm shower. We started to run the material through the great Gold Cube in the basement. Washed out the trays and then decided before we would start to pan out the concentrated we needed a hot dog. By this time John’s wife called and he really needed to get going. So we put everything in a pan and away he went. I had not heard from John if there was any gold in the fine material so I text him yesterday and asked if he found any colors and the only reply was "OH HECK YEA, LOTS" so I guess our little trip was a success. I have not seen the gold yet but have word into the wife to have him bring in the vial tomorrow with the gold in it. Might have just found a new little place for us to hit close to home!!

  • It's amazing what we're willing to do to get a little gold. But, I wouldn't trade those outdoor experiences with friends and family for anything else.

All the best, and thanks for the story,

    Lanny

  • WOW! I can just imagine how exciting that would be! It is a funny story, but sorry you went in freezing water.

  • Way to go Maurice: It's kind of amasing how, with some experience, one can find gold where you wouldn't have thought to look before.
