What Gold Detector to buy and why

Looking to buy a detector for nugget hunting and prospecting.  If you had 1K to spend, what would you get.

I've been looking at the Gold Bug 2 and the White's GMT as some of my options.  Keep in mind that I am a noob.  I have wanted to get into this hobby since childhood but never lived in an area where it was a possibility until now (living in northern California near the Nevada state line).  I've hear the GMT is easier for those newer as it has auto balancing.

Anyway, suggestions and opinions appreciated.

  • I have a treasure tracker IV. (Bounty hunter) it was heading down to Alabama next week.. Will let y'all know how I make out with it.
  • Xp deus, gold bug 2, Garrett ATPro/gold and minelabs xterra 705 are all good machines. The XP is my go to machine. It takes some work to master the settings but it really is a great machine.
    • Just locked down a used XP earlier today. Thanks for the comment, makes me feel better about the buy. Been researching for some time now.
  • I broke my leg back in december so Iv'e had a lot of time to research detectors.  Garrett AT gold looks like the best for the$. I bought one from MetalDectors.com. Got a Pro Pointer, a bunch of goodies and another free dector with it for $840. I only had a couple hours to try it out, but so far i'm impressed. I did a lot of reading and watched every video on YouTube.

    • Will have to give it a look see. I'm hoping to meet some folks soon and get some hands on with some units. Thanks.
  • If I were you, I would ask Jeff Williams.  He is a member of Gold Prospectors Space.  He uses them both and loves them both.  He could probably give you some good info.  Heavy Pans!
