Well I am thinking of the future here folks. I want to use some of the gold I got in alaska to make or plate 2 chains for me and my wife for valentines day. I am not sure what to do or how to go about it. Do I just buy some good neck chains and then a plating setup or is there a better way? I really have no clue how to even go about researching this. Yes I have googled it and all I have come across is chemical kits. I want to use my own gold. Or can I?

Thank you everyone for helping

  • The kit I have is from Caswell inc. I have done silver plate, gold plate and copy chrome, which isnt a true chrome but cleaned up and repaired an old heirloom revolver for a friend. (not a shooter, just for a glass display case. Keep in mind I did gold when the fluid was $65 and silver when it was $12. No clue how much it is now.  Its very easy with the Caswell products if you follow directions.

They would be the ones to ask about putting your gold into an electroplate emulsion. It may require expensive equipment or processes to do a batch. Other option is to add the correct sized flakes and peices proportional to silver castings. It takes a really good eye to do that and use only the correct size bits of gold. Otherwise they look fake , sloppy or junky.

When I make jewelry to sell, I order silver castings and clean and buff them then add natural gold to those with industrial adhesive, and buff with the felt dremel wheel and buffing compound. Men tend to buy the sluice necklaces and shovel, pick and pan hat pins and the girls buy the charm bracelet charms. Those sell fastest. If a casting is large enough to engrave I take it to my friends jewelry store and engrave the name of the river the gold came from. I used to have the closest town, but the river name means you can sell/trade or consign to all towns along the length of it so that made things a lot easier.

If your castings are not too large the sell values on the gold can be very high as jewelry accents from about 2,500 to 4,500 per 30 grm oz. But you will only be able to match say 20-30% of the gold you find and have them look nice. the rest of the flakes and peices will be too flat, too thick and chunky, too lifeless or just not look right with the casting. Kinda like a ceramic mosaic. Only certain ones fit in and look good.
