used metal detector advise

My wife asked me what i wanted for christmas so she can start saving now. Im thinking a used metal detector, but have no idea what kind to get. I know i want one that will be primarily for placer gold nuggets/deposits. I dont want anything too fancy or pricey, im thinking a used fisher gold bug. I dont want her to spend too much so on between 200$ & 400$ i really have no idea what will be effective at that price. So im hoping you guys can help point me in the right direction. Thanks guys

  • Thanks stephen, thats exactly what im doing, but to save some time and narrow down machines that will do what i need i ask you guys with expirence for suggestions. Otherwise im flying blind so to speak, and would probably
make a bad choice. Thanks for taking the time!=D
  • Go to Kellyco.com.. See what suits your budget.. All kinds of detectors to choose from . You are new to detecting and they will help you with a quailty machine . Remember keep it simple . Older machines sometimes have alot of adjusting to ground balance and discriminate out iron . Newer machines are better because they have all of the latest improvements that takes care of the old problems . Garrett/AT is around 675.00 new. but there is so much more out there.. you need to research for your self . And Kellyco is a good place to start..
  • Thanks guys, i have heard about counterfeit machines but ive also heard that the machines thought to be fake were really euorpean models or Australian models. I dont think crooks would waste their time on lower end models or entry level, not enough profit for the risk of getting caught. Right now my sole intention is to find the higher consentrations of flood gold. To maximize how much gold i can recover in the time im given. If im successful, ill be able to purchase a higher end model in no time but my goal as always is to pay for any upgrade in equipment with the gold i find. Right now i average 1.5-2.5 grms / trip. All by shovel and sluice. If i can locate more concentrated spots without having to waste time test panning i think i might double my average or better. Plus i can mark spots for a future trip. Thanks agan everyone. Keep it coming:-D
  • I personally use a tesoro lobo ST as my main gold machine. Although I am looking to switch to a PI type, I still swear by my lobo. However, let me tell you this. IMO people can argue for days as to which detector is better. I believe it comes down to how much you put into it. I have 300+ hours on this detector, and it serves me well every time I go out. Make sure you understand what you are looking to detect and get a suitable detector for your purposes. Even with gold, there are different VLF for different applications. For example, The smallest I have ever recovered with the lobo is 1.4 grains. Tiny I know. I don't want any smaller. If you get a much higher freq detector (GBII), you can easily detect gold flakes. I have no interest in detecting flakes, but some of my buddies just love it.

Also, reptoid is right. There is no fancy-ness on Tesoros. For the most part no fancy screens to tell you what's down there, and very limited bells and whistles. For me personally, I feel like why I want more esoteric "features" that just take more time to try to learn them. Keep it simple, work it slow and low, and dig every target ;)

    • Also, with my long winded response I forgot to add, the higher the operating frequency, the more sensitive it is to small gold. The trade off is all things same (coil, dirt, target), it is likely you will lose depth on larger stuff the higher the frequency you go.

That is to say, if you compare a detector running at 17.8 khz to one at 50+ khz, you can expect to see the following:

17.8khz will have diminished sensitivity to small gold, and very small gold will be practically invisible. However it will have decent depth on say ex. a 1/2 ounce nugget.

50+ khz will have augmented sensitivity to small gold, and very good sensitivity to very small gold. However it will not detect as deep on that same 1/2 ounce nugget.

      • Thank you Dusty Sky for the simple easy to understand frequency explanation. I now understand the frequency vs depth much better. Geez I dont understand why it has taken me this long to be able to finally grasp and understand it easier. Thanks!

  • He is not a sponcer but he does like the site and the people here and made the offer to give our members the best price very nice of him
