  • Thanks Dan,   I think I will try the Douglas Creek area (and yes I am a member of GPAA).   I went to school in Laramie back in ancient tmes but never did check out that part of the country other than for backpacking.

I have done the Atlantic City bit before,  my grandfather had homesteaded not far from there.     The state of Wyoming has purchased and is renovating a mine on the  South Pass City side for tourists to oogle.   The creek that runs thru there is fair sluicing,  and heavily claimed above and below the part now owned by the state.     The country there is absolutely beautiful but the winters can be brutal and long.

    Take care,  and thanks again.

    • Robin, Yup I know about the winters, I was stationed at F.E. Warren back in the 70's. The really bad part is the wind! Nasty! My first wife left me there in Cheyenne, ah! fond memories! I'm headed to Rock Creek about the 4th of Oct and hopefully do a little drywashing, some sluicing and definitely some panning! I'm also considering making Wyoming my home! Somewhere around Sheridan or Buffalo but I'm open to suggestions like Lander or Riverton or Thermopolis? Got any? Somewhere with snow but not tooo much wind! The only thing I really don't like about Sheridan or Buffalo is the two Interstates. Likes? VA Hospital in Sheridan and the Soldiers Home in Buffalo and a lot of places to fish! I love the "no taxes" part and will probably just make Wyoming my "Base" for myRV and just live full time travelling in that. I have been deciding between Oregon and Wyoming and since I wont own any property, it really doesn't matter to me, as long I'm West of the Mississippi! I do have friends in Oregon though and they want me out there. I'm retired Army, 100% Service Connected Disability, so I'm free to go where I please, but I do need the VA near to me. Any suggestions for Oregon? My buddies are/were working the Illinois River at Kerby. I'm asking a lot, but you do have more recent experience in those areas than me and I would appreciate any advice. ~drd

  • Sure, in Wyoming, GPAA has several claims just west of Laramie around Douglas Creek area, a known producer. There are also several places along northern Douglas Creek above the GPAA claims if you are not a member, along with several campgrounds. Further west you will find the semi ghost town of Atlantic City, not far south west of Lander, off hwy 28. Near there to the east is Rock Creek which was a very good producer in it's day. Again GPAA has claims just below the Mormon Cemetary. The actual owner of the claim will let you camp up to two weeks if you respect it and keep it clean. This is primitive camping with NO facilities. You will need a topo map to find it. Good luck, Robin!
