Traded my Lobo ST for a Cibola

Last week my buddy Sam, sent me his brand new Tesoro Cibola, and I sent him one of my used Tesoro Lobo Super Traq machines. I thought this would be a great way to see how a machine I have never used handled the same soil and trash situations I have successfully navigated with the LST. Sam was eager to try the Lobo ST for some coin and relic hunting down south, so we did the trade.

My first hour with the Cibola was a true eye-opener. At one point, I dug a 1959 nickel at about 7”, laying right next to an old iron square-head nail. I thought that was darn impressive. I finally got back into a field where I found the Peoples Line Steamer button, made by Scovill in 1883. The grass is too high now to swing fast or easy, so I worked small 10’x10’ grids swinging painfully slowly through the knee-high grass.

About 70-minutes into this process, I hit the tiny silver three-cent piece (1852?) around 7” below the grass. My first ever silver three-cent piece! It was a solid sounding target in the headphones, easily repeatable. I was impressed and surprised.

About 20-minutes later I hit the large three-cent piece (1863), down at about the same depth, around 15-feet from where I found the small one.  At that point I sat down and drank a bottle of water, in the 88-degree heat, looked at the two coins for a while and patted the Cibola like it was my favorite hunting dog.

The Cibola weighs 2.2-pounds. It is like a feather in your hand. The controls are basic, Threshold and Sensitivity, with a Discrimination dial and an All Metal VCO Pinpoint button. The discrimination is superior to that of the Lobo ST, which is by nature a super-sensitive “All Metal” gold nugget machine that also is able to discriminate.

I am biting at the bit to get the Cibola on the dry sand at the beach!!! Also, I have to include a photo of the way Sam set up the Lobo ST I sent him – Just Awesome!
