  • Thanks , I am actually looking for a test kit to determine the carat value of gold. 10 , 14 , 18 , 24 etc. I have some concentrated HNO3. Am I mistaken that you simply use different concentrations on a line of your sample scratched on a piece of ceramic ? I have some scrap to sell and don't want to get ripped off. Thanks Again , I emailed you just before I got your last message. I'll wait a while.
  • daniel, or did you mean gold purity test? sorry, just stumbled across acid/scratch testing.gouge it with their secret rock, then use the graduated strengths of acid?but they do not specify acid strength, they specify acid#10 etc. will do some better searches and post.
  • mohs scale of hardness.perfected 1822. 1.talc 2.gypsum 3.calcite 4.flourite 5.apatite 6.orthoclase feldspar 7.quartz 8.topaz 9.corrundum 10. daiamond. the method is,a 3 will scratch a 2. a 10 will scratch a 9 etc.they sell kits for doing these tests, not too spendy. another key mineral test , the streak test.keep a 4inch piece of ceramic tile around, use the back of the tile, and simply draw a line on the tile.the color of the streak will assist in identifying the mineral.cant find my sneaky reference book, will google and post a streak clolor list.wait here, oll be back.
