Sampling A New Claim

Jane "my Wife " gave me a membership to the Shasta miners group here in Redding California so Sunday we took a drive out to one of  the claim areas Bull Dog 1 ,2 , 3 and 4  to check them out as they were the closes to the house, Only 20 miles.

The Claims are in a very narrow valley with a strong Creek running down through it, I dug 1/2 a bucket of material from the bank and 1/2 of one from the Creek, dumb me forgot my classifiers. and back to the house we went. That evening classified at 3/16 and ran it down the Barbie sluice as Jane calls it and came up with quite a bit of flour gold for no more than I ran.

Looking Forward to more time at Bull Dog !!!

  • Well Plans are in place around my house for a return trip to the new French Gulch claim "Chicks Place" for a full day of really working the Creek. This time I will take my recirculating sluice so water flow is more controllable. Im looking forward to really seeing what the creek can produce !2960226785?profile=RESIZE_1024x10242960228912?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024

  • Back at French Gulch saturday the Prospecting Club here in Redding had a group outing at the new Claim "Chick's Place" This was the first time I have particapated in a "group outing" so it was different having so many people around all the time I'm not to sure it was my cup of tea. The caim was quite exciting with just a few hours of sampling found good chunky flake and two small pickers,  The gold was quit rough and chunky  as its very close to its load the Creek was running very high so I had to get creative with the sluice placment it wasn't Ideal but all and all a great day !2960225733?profile=RESIZE_1024x10242960226029?profile=RESIZE_1024x10242960226965?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024

  • The gold I did find sampling Bull Dog #4 Quite alot of Mercury covered micro gold I'm guessing thats a hint to how heavly this area was worked !2960224442?profile=RESIZE_1024x10242960224520?profile=original

  • Thanks Andrew your experience is always a great help !!!

  • More photos of the claims 2960224626?profile=RESIZE_1024x10242960224925?profile=RESIZE_1024x10242960225459?profile=RESIZE_1024x10242960225777?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024

    • 2960224319?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024all 4 of those 20 acre claims are stones throw from the road and yes, hammered for 150 years.as right below a fabulously rich hardrock complex. I think the.relative straightness of the creek, combined with the steepness of the sidehills would make the paystreak very narrow.high flows during winter blast through that little canyon.this hypothetical paystreak would be fragmented/intermitant,especially in easier access areas, where most folks only look.at the upstream end,the gold may be very foamy(crystaline)and light for its size.high winter flows blow that stuff down canyon, past obstructions/low pressure areas that would catch normal placer gold.so your looking for a payspot, not a paysatreak.could take years of sampling to find one,but in such an area, pay you handsomely for your time.

  • I spent about 5 more hours getting to know the Bull Dog claim complex and doing a little sampling. The Creek was pretty baron of sighns of gold,  As if it had been pretty well dredged through the years,    its not real deep or wide  and most of it has pretty exposed bed rock. the sid hills of the valley have exposed rock and there are plenty of sites that have been worked in the past. I'm thinking it might be a spot to sample with a detecter before waisting alot of time digging any one have thoughts on ho to precead ?

  • hey howard, just now sitting down and getting back online.break time.that must be the clubs 80 acres on french, hard to imagine there not being some pay around that little gulch.the club also has a decent river claim adjacent to the d.c. campground near here.heard the strategy at bulldog is to slog up or down the creek through the brambles and etc. seeking some older, clayey material.lotsa rich lode mines in that country.happy holidays
