  • Rhonda & Lee, Hoss here, There are really 2 ghost towns Mamoth and Goldfield there is also the Blue bird mine. They are all easy to get to just go to AJ thats Apache Jct. follow the signs to canyon lake, that would be the old apache trail and you will run into all three. Now about the mountain, it has been declared a wilderness area for quite some time. Do not let this disclourage you. AJ would be your base once you start learning the area you will be plesently suprised. I do recomend you stop at the pro-mack in town as they are really helpfull to those new to the area.If you hit town drop me an E-mail, have more questions just ask always willing to help HOSS
  • To Rhonda & Lee hey there my name is Hoss Chalupa and I am born and raiseed around the mountain. There are all kinds of storys and mis information about the mountain . There are also some good peaple here. The problem is there is a lot of infighting and just plan bullshit umungst a lot of us. For example there is two Pro-Mack shops in the area, one in the junction and one out at mamoth mine ghost camp both are very knowledgeble but could not find a kind word for each other. there are also some groups who cater to what we call snow birds. This is OK but most are a pain in the ---. Let me Know what you are looking for and I should be able to at least point you in a direction..Feel free to contact me either here or at hosschalupa@hotmail.com. HOSS
    • Exploreing that ghost camp sounds fun! Sure doesn't sound friendly. We'd like to find some places to dry wash or if there's water work with that. We've been told you really have to hike far to find a place to prospect. That isn't possible for us but we do have a 4x4. Where abouts is the ghost camp?
  • I don't believe there is any prospecting allowed in the superstition mountains. I have heard of a fellow picking up a few nuggets with a detector. There are stories about gold and gold ledges in the four peaks areas and near Payson. Goldfield is the only place in the Superstitions where gold was ever found. You shoudl check with the park officials before you take in a detector. There have been silver strikes in the area south of the mountains but only stories of lost gold mines. "I still look for them"

    Hope this helps
