Prospecting in Scandinavia?

Hi Folks.

I'm very new to prospecting and finds it very interesting.

I'm from Scandinavia and is looking for some good spots to try it out for the fun of it.

Does anyone here know any good places?

Regards - Peter.

  • I now see that you are from Denmark, sorry! So my former reply is of no use, I guess. Gold in Denmark, hmm, do you have rivers? :-D For sure there are no mountains :-)

  • I am new to gold prospecting as well, and live in northern Norway. The maps from our geological department (NGU) are hard to understand, often. But, it is for sure that a lot of areas have not been explored. So gold can be just anywhere.

I have spent a lot of time investigating areal photos/maps of my local area, looking for places that seems promising. The best map is this one: http://www.skogoglandskap.no/kart/gardskart_pa_internett

On this map, you can switch between different areal photos taken on different years. In my area, the 2003 aerial photos are great. Switching between different aerial photos are really helpful when you can't see an area as clear as you would. Another photo from another year can do magic! And it will show you roads, even the smallest of unpaved roads. So you know if you can get yourself to the area or not.

I have not found a single piece of gold, yet. Have only been out panning once, and that in an area I supposed have no gold (close to home).

  • Hi Peter:

You have these sites for geology  http://www.sgu.se/sgu/ for sweden http://www.ngu.no/no/ for norway and http://www.geologia.fi/index.php/sv/ for finland. In general it´s better gold in the norh of scandinavia. Hope you do some nice finds...

  • Peter, welcome to the forum,

It's hard to for most of us to recommend places to prospect in Scandinavia since we are not there, but I would recommend that you look for geological surveys and reports of  the countries that are in Scandinavia and see where gold has been found before, check the laws on prospecting in the countries which you decide are the best for gold, then it's up to you to find an area that you can do testing/panning to see if there is gold there, once you find an area that has placer gold start getting the gold.

You can find  most of this info/maps/reports online or also in many local libraries.

What I described above is what prospecting is, it's the ability to research and then test to find valuable deposits of minerals/metals.

That being said, I did a quick search and found a  lot of info, but most of it was commercial  mining related, but here's a little info on locations in Norway that can maybe help you get started if you're close enough to go to the areas mentioned.

You can also find Youtube Videos of gold panning in some Scandinavia countries, here's a couple links.
