  • The snow should be sticking in a couple weeks not a good time to be up there, I lived in Fairbanks for 25 years. Go next year in June, July or August buy plenty of Deet or Muskox spray. Good luck.
  • It's September now. Next month is October. Doesn't it start to snow the middle of September??? Is going to "prospect" in October such a good idea. Wouldn't saving your money until June sound like a better idea??? Just my opinion.
    • We're having a warm fall. At least we call 40-50 warm. When it does cool off it can be quick. Right now is a perfect time though because there are no bugs(mosquitos, whitesox, noseeums,) to speak of.
Mid october is a more likely time for the first snow. Anchorage area. Weather this year out on the rivers is great. Hunters and everyone out there are happy.
  • If you drive north from Anchorage toward Fairbanks on the new highway try the creeks along the road south of the igloo. If you go south from Anchorage down the Kenai try the creeks before the cutoff going to hope. There are a few claims in the area.
  • Last year I stopped at the Forks Road House on Petersville Road. I was able to find a few flakes in Peters Creek near the bridge over the creek on the left fork of the road. The wife and I had some great food by Chef Robert at the Road House. He made some potato soup that was the best I ever had and Salmon that was the first that I thought was fit to eat.

I panned about 3 pans of dirt from the edge of the creek and found a few flakes in each pan. I tried out in the middle around some large rocks and didn't get a thing. It started raining and I decided to call it a day and seek shelter.

We parked the camper down at the bridge, about 200 yards from the Road House.

This road is South of Denali, but the right fork will eventually touch the far south edge of the park. You will need a very capable vehicle to go much past The Forks. All the other traffic we found on the road was
four wheelers. I have a 1 ton Dodge 4 wheel drive pick up.

You can pay to pan at the El Dorado gold mine after a really nice tour. They guarantee you to get some from the bag that come with the tour. The gift center also lets you see and hold a 14 pound nugget.

We spent a rainy day at the Independence Mine. It is now shut down and is a State Park ( I Think). It was a neat tour and I found out as we left we could pan the streams that flow down from the tailings and shafts.

I also did some panning in Chicken. It was $10 for 24 hours at their dirt piles in the camp ground. I got a little gold and my photo is now all over the world. From Japan to Germany and the Netherlands. About 3
tour buses came by while I was panning and I think everyone took a picture of me and now I reside in photo albums all over the world. There was a fair amount of them that asked lots of questions on how to do it.

I know it is getting late for this year, but I spent a week in the GPAA camp in Nome. . It was a great experience. And I wanted to go back this year, but it wasn't to be. Maybe next year.

My wife was more interested in pretty rocks and other tourist things or I would have spent more time prospecting.
