  • ok, there are holes like that on the American River, where i live, can i use an existing hole like that or do i need to dig my own?
    • You can use the holes that are already there charissa but the responsible miner would and should fill in the holes he has dug. Mostly it's just chunking the big rocks that have been removed, back into the holes and backfilling as much as you can. Probably some of the holes were where they were actually getting product so like the man said, test the holes before use. Up on the Klamath they were even moaning about legal booming and how to stop us. Reason? Turbidity and holes not backfilled. Make sure your used water does not reach the stream or river and that fixes the turbidity issue but your conscience has to guide you on the holes.
      • interesting subject folks.but i have to use two pumps to move much material.i use a 6.5/p180 unit for the main suction nozzle, and a recirculating 2.5 horse honda for the supply/blaster nozzle rig that is strapped on the side.with the supply side adjusted properly,am able to work in about a small bathtub size hole full of water.good luck

  • Victor,

"Booming" has different meaning depending on the era of time your referring too, but I think your referring to the most recent activity that the term of booming is used which is dredging from a hole fill in with water.

What you will need is a pump to pump water from a stream or water source to your hole which you have dug in a area that you have tested and know that there is gold to be gotten, usually a bench above the streambed, you will also have to have plenty of hose as to comply with the dredging ban that states that you have to be 100 yds or more away from any active stream with your dredging equipment and your pump will have to be capable of pumping that far and have enough lift if you're elevated more than a couple of feet above the level of the streambed , the more your above the stream the bigger pump you will need.

Alright now you have water in your hole at least 100 yds away from the stream, now you can use your pump for your dredge or highbanker combo, you will be recirculating the water in your hole while you dredge down to the pay layer and gold.

The down side to this is the water will not be clear since you're recirculating, you also need to make sure that no water from your operation is getting back to the stream, a settling pond/second hole can be used and have your dredge/highbanker combo depositing dredged material and water into this hole a shallow channel can connect the two holes so the water at the top of your settling pond can flow back to your dredge hole to keep water in it.

I guess you will need a shovel as well to dig the hole/s!! LOL
