Newbie to Drywashing!

So I'm brand new to prospecting, it's been in my family for years, gold fever! I live in Southern Utah and my cousin and I are planning on prospecting in Northern Nevada with metal detectors and dry washers. I've run into a few questions I haven't found answers to, 1st best type of dry washer bellows or blower? 2nd Is dry panning just as effective as regular wet panning? 3rd What is a good brand of pans? I know where to go and to look, I just want some good equipment that will find the yellow stuff!

  • So for general metal detecting you don't need a claim, obviously dont go on other claims. So when dry washing do you always need a claim or is there an extent of drywashing that you need one?
    • Okay, so is it frowned upon or an extreme risks to check out abandoned mines? I've been in plenty just for fun but never prospected. And if you can is there much reward if using VLF detector or do you need a pulse?
      • there is a Mine in Barstow that is Over 30 Miles with 3 Levels. Water in a Mine is a Death Trap. Old Timers Would Cover a Pit with a Sheet of Plywood and cover it with Dirt Death Trap. Watch the Collar of a Pit They can Give Away taking 3' of Dirt and You to the Bottom of the Pit Death Trap. If you Go in Mark the Walls to Show the Way Out and take a Good Flash Light they Get BLACK DARK .Your Phone Will NOT Work ..Once agin check the LR200o for Claims. but here is how to go about a Mine--(During WW2 the Govement Shutdown Mining then after the War Industry pick up the old timers took the Knowledge with them, so just becouse the mine has not been worked does not mean there is no gold.) they would pile work able Ore to one side for latter Processing. You could have some of the Pieces Assayed and file a claim then use the Tailing to Pay for the Operation.. but for a Day trip Start at the Bottom of the Tailing Pile with a Rake  and your Metal Detector.

    • With water you can work around Public Bridges or the Water way as long as it is not Claimed and Posted. not sure how much of the Bank you can Process there is a Limit, and a distance for a Highbanker with a Setteling pond... In the Desert first Check the LR2000 for Caims in the area ( people will take Claim Markers) if it is Not Claimed and You plain to Dig You are an "Explorer" You Must Fill Your Holes at the End of the Day. Then when you Find Your Honey Hole you can File a Claim it is $185 for a Year, I have the Links on My GPS page ..

      • it is My understanding With Load (rocks) you can only take out what you can Carry on your Back and you can only use Hand Tools... Privet Property with water and Mineral rights has its own Rules just like you would Build a Shed or add on to your house you need to file with the County a Plain of Operation.

  • Everyone has there own preference, The Blower has a Lot to Haul, the drywasher, the Motor, the hose, and Gas, then there is the Noise. but You can Feed it and work a lot of Material. if you get one with the Vibrator thats good it also makes a Static. the Puffer is a little lighter and only takes a Battery ( That Will Go Dead if not placed on wood). the Puffer action makes its own Vibration. as for Panning Wet is always the Best, Sweep or Vacume up some crackes in Exsposed bed rock in a DryWash and Pan it Wet.

    • Huh okay, thats a brilliant idea! So would you need 40 gallons a day or is that water recyclable for each day after?
    • So how do you run a water recycler in the desert? Is just a sluice with water at the end and a water pump feeding?
      • a Good 12v Pump a Few Buckets and a big Tool Box (above Ground Swimming Pool :)

    • It is Best to work the Material the way you find it but you can run a Water Recycler in the Desert if you Bring Enuff Water. I use about 40gal. use a few Window Screens to hold back the Over burden
