Mining offshore Nome

These might seem like  silly questions.  Watching the new Bering Sea mining program on Discovery Channel and the thought occured to me,   How is the sea floor regulated?  Do these guys have to have claims that are GPS positions on a grid or is it a freaking free for all as to who gets to a certain area first?  Do they have to stay a certain distance away from the other dredgers or ?   I would think it would be really easy for them to be re-sucking up each others tailings if everybody was just hap-hazzardly dredging wherever they choose.   Maybe some of you Alaskan miners can chime in and answer a few of these questions.

  • The nome nugget had an article on this last week, they said all claims are taken, and all permits are gone, so don't make alot of plans.   They did suggest that if you want to go to Nome, go on the GPAA trip and learn about the area and what you are up against, it will be cheaper, than going on your own.

  • How much surface area is in each claim?
  • GREAT question. The same one came up today as my neighbor and I were standing in a prospecting shop. Now I can tell him the answer.

  • I don't think it is a silly question. Actually I was thinking about it when I watched the program last week.

Thanks for asking as we have now received the answer.

  • Theres two public spots, East and West, rest is claimed. And you must abide by these rules or you lose your permit.

    • Thanks Astro! Not that I'm going. Having been shot down twice has cured me from getting my feet higher than a curb, so I doubt I'll ever make it back to Alaska. I used to live south of there, in King Salmon. It's just good when people respond with knowledge of situations, with beneficial applications to all.

  • I'm not an Alaskan, but I can answer your question, yes they have claims, there are a few areas that are opened to the public and not claimable, but most of the waters have claims.
