  • Andrew your idea is a lot like this one.  I have not seen one used but the hypothesis is interesting.

This information is from http://www.mine.mn/Gold_Pan.htm.  There are a lot of very interesting

    pan ideas at this site.

    Kress's Gold Pan (1957)
    Kress's Gold Pan - 1957 US patent
A pan much flatter than a conventional pan.
The inventor claims the gentle slope enables faster panning and easier recovery of small gold. The patent includes the Kress hypothesis reworded thus: "The angle of inward slope of the circular wall of a gold pan should be in the range of 18 to 26 degrees; less than this and the contents of the pan are likely to remain inert, more than this and the contents of the pan are prone to collapse regardless of the size of the particles or their density."
A second innovation is  a tight fitting fine metal mesh screen.
A third innovation is "a canvas or other matting material" put under the screen, clamped taunt between the screen rim and the pan wall to aid trapping fine gold.

  • OK, sounds very interesting! can you add a picture? Pretty Please?
    • bliss, just drug my worn out carcass back to camp. been hauling my 4inch out of a half mile canyon,as dredge season ends day after tommorrow.9-15, in this part of ca. will have to fabricate a new one, but only takes 15 minutes.then another 15 minutes to load the picture, etc.my old one seems to have grown legs, haha.starting to rain here, need 3 more trips down canyon,am bailing this claim for the year.will try and get some pics online.
      • Get to it at your own pace, I am a patient grandma..... be careful with all the stuff. message me when you get to it, I may forget to look by then! LOL Nancy
  • I guess I don't get it, do you have a pic?
    • rick, basically just a large gold pan, circular piece of carpet/moss in the bottom, circular piece of screen over carpet, short carriage bolt thru center, wing nut underneath pan at the center.perfect for root and moss mining, skimming flood gold around boulders etc.speed pan till carpet/screen begin to show, add more material, repeat.panning production x10. cleanup fast and easy.made a quarter ounce on deadwood creek one day .sorry i wasnt more concise.helps the screen is kinda concave,so when tightening the wingnut, screen lays flat accross bottom of pan.(edges of screen not curled up,thus holding/trapping little pebbles at edges.moss becomes impacted quickly, needs more frequent cleanups.green outdoor carpet works fine.could even have 6 spare carpets, throw loaded carpets in a small bucket, put clean one in pan, continue production.wheel/bluebowl at home.best way to go light/cover ground.
