Metal Detector Coil

I have a Garrett Infinium L/S and i would like to be able to switch out coils with out having unwind the hole cable. I use 3 deferent coils. Why not be able to have a 4 pin water proof connector for a quick disconnect and connect. Any ideas.

  • I know the cable is not supposed to be wound on the lower shaft. just put on straight with zip ties. Some sciency oscillation reason or something. I dont really know why. To squeeze an extra inch of ground depth or help the auto ground cancel. Mines not good enough to matter for either lol.

But, if you did the opposite and coiled on the lower shaft and ziptied and then went straight into the plug. Then you would only need two spare lower shafts. A marker line on the upper shaft, and then just unplug, push the shaft button and pop the new one in.

Just a thought. Your detector manufacturer may not like the idea. I'm pretty sure they would say no to splicing the cable shorter or adding another plug as the settings rely on a known range of ohms of resistance for the cable.

    • Thanks for the info. Especially about coiling the cable around the shaft. I never knew about that but it makes sense. Thanks again and God Bless.

      • My detector is low end and keeps the gold coil on. Its main use is when I have a hole open full of muddy water. Before i close I will work the hole to make sure there isnt anything still hiding. The tiny coild goes around the bigger rocks and in between too but when it gets the real use, is when I have already been pulling flakes and I want to be sure everything is gone. You might want to research why its supposed to be wired straight and if the trade off is only a small amount, just not worry about it for the extra time you would save being able to swap in different tools and actually be working with it.  Its those little 5 and 10 min things we do without thinking about them that eat up the hunt time.

        • I use 3 different coils. One is small  for placer in streams with large cobbles. 2nd is for bench gravel bars and banks. 3rd is for out in the desert which larger in diameter and can penetrate alot deeper. The main reason i got the L/S is because my job was to remove cobbles and locate hits because the nozel operator was right behind me.
