July 9-found my oldest silver dime

Haven't done a post like this in a while so here it goes. Got a couple hours to do some detecting today. Didn't want to drive to far so I headed into historic downtown Bangor. Wasn't there long before someone called the cops and told them I was digging private property. A cruiser pulled up next to me and and after about a 2 minute conversation he said "enjoy the rest of your day". So I did! Heres a pic of todays spot right in the middle of downtown...

This strip of grass is loaded with targets. I didn't dig anything deeper than 4". Wanted to cover as much ground as possible and get a feel for the place. I will be back to see what else lays there in the deeper dirt. Was there for just over 2 hours and this is what I dug minus the 2 keepers. 3 broken junk necklaces, can slaw, pull tabs and a bunch of clad coinage....

Heres the 2 keepers... The Canadian 2 dollar coin isn't rare or valuable but has been on my hit list for a while now. I just think they look cool. The 1 dollar Canadian coin has a loon on it and we refer to them as a "loonie". The 2 dollar coin we call a "toonie", so this is my first toonie. The other is an 1870 Newfoundland dime. I never seen one untill today and it is my oldest dime so far. Upon doing research on it I found out it's actually sterling....92.5% silver where US silver coins are 90%....interesting stuff! Here they are....

Not the most spectacular finds I've had but glad to add them to my collection. And as always....it was a great day!

  • Awesome find Bob!

  • Wow... Happy for you buddy

  • congrats Bob you deserve it. You have pulled enough beaver tails. it's about time something really good came out of the ground, even though some of your other finds are not to shabby either,

  • Well Done!

  • Holy crap! After some research and talking with folks who know more about these coins than me, that little newfie dime is worth about $300. It was minted at the royal mint in London England. And only 30,000 were minted. Obverse 2.I've been told by a few that it will grade at least VG. Think this little silver is gonna get professionally graded and slabbed. By far my most valuable coin. I should edit my original post because I wrote "Not the most spectacular finds I've had"...after some research it is the most spectacular find I've made. And turned a great day into a wicked freakin awesome day :)
