    Buying a Gold Claim

I'm not saying ALL sellers are bad but just be VERY careful.  If you know the person or someone that you know recommends them...I say go for it.  If not...caveat emptor (LET THE BUYER BEWARE!!!)

  • Well I have sold one of my claims on Craigs List. Part of a number of claims I had for over 30 years; so not some newly conceived "hopeful" thing just filed and placed up for sale.

I think the first thing you should do is see how long the claim(s) has been located/claimed/held/worked.  The Brand New things you see that are jumping up out of the woodwork are "minin the miners"....in my opinion.

I see someone  just put a large number of claims up for sale on Ebay that are  in close proximity to my claims.... on little creeks that are not much to do about anything.  Oh the pictures are pretty, and the descriptions are nice and feel good, and there are probably a color or two.  As they say in the discription "Located in a Gold Rich Area".

But I have doubts about the real gold values amounting  to much.  Plus the issue of andronomous fish is of importance to the ability to really do anyting such as dredging etc.  Some places won't even let you use a sluice or gold pan if it is in critical salmon habitat drainage.

Best I can say is be careful and check it out close.....Lets see the gold.  If the claim is relatively new then I would be extremely cautious.

  • not a good idea
  • I personally would never even think of it..way too many crooks out there...basically buyer beware.
  • There were a couple of guys up on the Illinois River in Oregon last year, who asked my friends to leave because it was "their claim". Of course my buddies respected this with little thought. They had bought this claim from somone in Wisconsin! No due diligence, no property inspection, no brains. When the real owners showed up, they politely asked them to leave but ended up calling the law for support! It turns out they didn't even have DEQ Permits! There is gold there but it wasn't theirs! If you can't afford the time to do due diligence and inspect the property beforehand, you shouldn't even be in the market. The New 49ers have claims for sale now and then, if you are a member. These are proven claims but with the crap going on in Califunya right now...sitting on the bank and watching the pretty water flow by gets boring after awhile. You can reach them at www.goldgold.com
  • becarfel there is a groupe ont there using that pice of shit site geo from blm. they dont even go out to the claim investagte at the blm or anything they over filed on me on the n yuba. the new owners now have to sue to try to retrive there money.should have done there recherch  Bill
  • With the price of gold as high as it is, there are people who will take advantage of the folks with the gold fever running hot through them which can, in someinstances keep a person from thinking straight....

Think about it, if the claim is REALLY good, and has is is producing enough color to mine, why sell it "cheap".... though of course there are exceptions, but why sell it at all and why not lease it out for a year and then sell it if the person leasing wants to continue pursuing the project [agreed upon purchase price before the lease is signed]

For someone just starting out, I believe that joining a club that has "productive" claims you can go to as a member, is the best thing to do, find out if the area where you want to have a claim is conducive to your liking, while yer there, do your due diligence and research deeper into the area that has historically produced metal, and then research further and see if the place you want to claim is open [sometimes the county recorder office has a mining claims file, though many have discontinued them now with the use of computers] and of course the Blm has active mining claims listed as long as you travel to the regional office and go through the archives to make sure the claim you want is not in part someone else's [senior claim]

Yes you can purchase mining claims on the net and there are probably more people that are not hucksters than there are shady types, but personally i would not risk a pig in a poke over an google earth map photo, an email that expresses that "yeah ive owned the claim for X years" without being able to walk the claim, research the abstract [chain of ownership] and cross check for any senior claims that are in the area..... why risk a lawsuit where no one wins.

    • blueduck!! I agree with joining a club as the best way to begin prospecting, especially in Calif. and Ariz. where there are many clubs. When I sell a claim, first I will take the potential buyer out to work the claim, gather up buckets of samples and run them thru a sluice, small trommel, or spiral wheel. If they like what they see than we can work out terms etc. I would never buy a claim from someone who is not willing to meet you at the claim in person!!! John B
      • now that is the way to treat folks!  face to face is even better than just permission to go to the claim and check it out [at least you know the claim is where its supposed to be] and then it can be checked further in the county records and at the BLM offices.....just because a person is willing to meet at a claim site may not be the total indication they have full senior rights and due diligence is still needed.... not saying that you or anyone else offering such is a huckster, just saying caveat emptor is always the best of policies no matter what transaction is taking place.... especially when there really are con men [and women] out there to separate decent folks from their pocketbooks.

A local fella I know who passed on a few years ago and his nephew who passed on recently were known for "salting" a claim which they had worked and could show people there really was gold there where THEY said to dig..... then they would wait til a couple years alter and file on it again.... and THAT was before the internet brought folks together faster!!! but they had a lot of knowledge anyway they just used people's greed to 'fund their real operations" when things got slow or they needed a chuckle.  even doing the paperwork research folks would get took by them if they didnt know someone in the area who knew the scam.....

" a fool and his money" and all that rot ya know.

        • We actually started an inspection and sampling service for greenhorns thinking about buying gold claims beacause of the rampant fraud on ebay and other places. If a claim is worth $5,000 - $10,000 you are NOT going to find it on ebay. If you are not living and working near your claim - why bother? Just join a club. - Terry
