I have to go to Gaffney for a business trip next week and was wondering if there is any place to do a little prospecting while I am there.

Since I'll be flying I'll only have a small shovel and my pan that I can take.  Will I be wasting the space in my luggage or can anyone give me pointers on where I can go to play around.

Thank you for any information.

  • Burnt Mill campground is a good place to put in a dredge, but is no place for a woman by herself. Johnny Walker is a great owner, but the crowd that goes there is rough. You would be better to drive to Thermal City, or the Cotton Patch in North Carolina. All land in the Carolina's is privately owned, but those pay to play sites can be a lot of fun.

GPAA Matthews in NC has a great website, and travels in groups to prospect.Check out their website.
  • Jennifer,

There is a rural campground on King's Creek that allows panning in Blackburg S.C. called Burnt Mill Campground, which is about 8 to 10 miles northeast of Gaffney, I have never been there but have heard of others going and finding a little gold, it's said that it is $5 a day for panning, you can read more about the pros and cons in these threads and then decide for yourself, there are also pictures of the creek in the first thread, the address of the campgrounds is in the first post in the second thread.

  • Just a few days... this time... I also have no idea what my schedule will be like so I may not have any time anyway. They are talking about possibly transferring me there so my husband and I are trying to learn as much about the area as we can so we know what places to look for a home if we need to... I've been looking at schools, and such for the family stuff.. but I figured I could come here to find advise for the fun stuff!

    Thank you for the info!

  • All the places I know in the area need a dredge. How long will you be in the area?
