First Time Swinging Near Oatman, AZ

I got the nugget shooting bug from Bucket and Boomer's youtube videos. Just got a SuperTraq and really enjoyed digging, though all I found were bullets and shells. Does anyone here know if there are nuggets to be found in the Black mountains just north of Oatman, AZ? There are lode mines everywhere, but I'm not sure if all the gold there is flour. Could anyone recommend a book or video that would help me learn more about the kind of geology to look for? I see black sand here and there in the washes. Some washes are nothing but black sand. So many places to search, it's quite daunting but I'll just keep diggin till I find something.

  • Look up Gold basin, north of kingman about 30 miles.

was quite a few GPAA claims there.

I did good while I was there.

  • Jim we spend time in Havasu every winter but don't live there year round...so we want to make the most of our short time while we are there. I have been reading a lot of publications from the Arizona Geological Survey. They have all kinds of reports available. http://www.azgs.az.gov/ they also covered the black hills rather extensively.

  •  I would recommend to go where everyone runs drywashers and detect the tailing piles and washes.

A good book to read would be "Following the Drywashers" 7th edition by Jim Straight,  found most anywhere they sell good gold prospecting books.

    • You mean detect the dry-washer tailings? I was going to get a small puffer, do they really miss stuff? Ya know, I haven't seen anyone dry washing, and I haven't seen any dirt piles. Though there are active lode mines nearby. The area I'm in is kind of hard to get to. I ride up the washes on a tw200 four-stroke. I'd like to join the local prospecting club, but they meet 30 miles away in Kingman and my bike can barely handle 65. Anyway, I'll share my results. Should I stick around quartz occurrences and black sand or have those places already been covered? I reckon this year's rain mixed stuff up well anyway.

Just so much terrain, there's room for all of us out there.

  • very nice let us know when you find that nugget ...good luck there are alot of people here that detect and I am sure someone will give you some good advice
