Dredging through the winter months, how I stay warm .

Hello folks as most of you guys know I stay in Scotland. The rivers here are seldom warm except in high summer. I've dredged all year round for the last 5 years and I normally do 2 fills on the dredge . The secret to staying warm when dredging is a drysuit and a 200g undersuit . The drysuit I use is a cordura trilaminate ,this type of suit can be expensive butt after trying a few different types wet, drysuit neoprene 7mm, double skin army issue, and finally my otter. I found That the cordura was the best . I found that noeprene wasn't very good in sharp rock situations and I was always glueing it back together, using black witch . The cordura trilaminate suit is by far the best option for winter dredging if you don't have a water heater. The undersuit is probably just as important and key to staying warm . I use a Northern Diver spx 100 for my first fill and then have  a warm lunch , then and I use a Northern Diver flectalon 200 and that works really great for me! Changing suits at break time is crucial if you're working Hard as drysuits are sweatsuits . I use a 7mm noeprene hood again I have 2 hoods .5 mm neoprene, Kevlar gloves . I tend to cover my drysuit knees , elbow's and crutch area's with 3m Marine 5200. This is also great on your gloves butt remember to just apply it to your gloves fingers and palms because it doesn't stretch the same as noeprene butt it saves you money especially if your burning through gloves.last Butt not least is drysuit socks . I've used the same sock type from the start, Fourth element and they are brilliant..

I hope this helps and if anyone has any questions or input on this I'd like to hear from you any tips would be great cheers Arrrrrr

  • Hi, I was wondering if you have any idea where  I could get repair parts for my dry suit ?  I need to replace the ends of my arms, the rubber is wore out and I seen replacement cups somewhere but can't remeber where lol. The old ones  are cracked and don't keep water out of my suit anymore.

    • Hi dredger Jeff. I personally have gone with the change it yourself option as dive shops are very expensive..you can buy new rubber cuffs from eBay and glue them yourself .I would watch YouTube as how to change them out the cuffs are not a big problem to sort yourself. Or if you have the cash I would get the sytech system fitted and no more expensive repair s you can fix them anywhere and there latex not so hard on the skin .I hope this helps .drysuits going wrong is very common givin that the rubber is perishable and in time they need replaced .cheers buddy Arrr
  • Thank you sir, currently broke but that information will come in handy in the future. Long arming it gets pretty cold in colorado.
    • Hey Tim j , there's nothing cheap in gold hunting on my side of the pond. However you don't need to buy new ! I always buy used and it's way easier on the funds cheers
